Bonnie and Lotties scrabbling under the fleece was still driving me crazy so I decided it had to go!

They are now on newspaper and hay and seem happy.
They have a snuggle sack each and a tube so they have somewhere to hide and the squabbling has ceased. Poor Bonnie even had a scratch on her nose because they couldn't get on together under fleece.

I'm glad because they moult so much and the washing machine was collecting their hair so I'm finding hay and newspaper easier.

does this method not increase the chance of hay poking in the eye ? how do you chose the best sort of hay for this type of bedding ? sorry for all the questions haha.

I don't put lots of hay in and they do tend to flatten it down after they've had a rummage in it. They sleep in their sacks so they aren't burrowing in it.

To be honest we have 2 boys who live outside on straw and they've never poked their eyes. I've also had piggies in the past live on straw and I've never had a problem.

I've tried fleece in my GP's cage, but mine seem just as happy on newspaper and hay too. I give them fleece in their c & c indoor run, with hay separately in the corner but the fleece always gets covered in hay and it's really difficult to get it off before washing it. I'm sure there's a technique to getting it all off easily, I just haven't found it yet!

Mine get the same - newspaper (from my dad, bless my parents they save all their papers then when i see them every week or so, they hand over the haul:p), then hay on top, with a snuggle sack if they want to get comfier. They seem quite happy with it, and of course means there is guaranteed to be lots of hay round for them to eat!

I find it really quick to clean as well, get the hay out and shake it, change all the paper & put fresh in, then the hay goes back, topping up as needed. (all hay gets chucked at the weekend or if it gets wet). The pigs always grumble about their stuff being moved out, but are happy once its clean again!rolleyes

I've taken mine off fleece in the last couple of months too - mine were doing the same. I would have the cage all neat and tidy, put the piggies back in and they had the fleece all up and hiding in it and like you, it was starting to be a nightmare for cleaning. So, they are back on newspaper, megazorb and hay and seem to be a lot happier. They've got their cosy beds for lying in if they don't want to lay on the hay.
