C&c Cage In Garage?

Hi,

I posted last night to introduce myself and mentioned a few concerns, where Tim informed me that my cage size is too small.

I have 2 boars that are 11 weeks and live in a 58cm x 120cm cage in the garage.

My intention was to move them into the utility room before winter, however now i need a bigger cage that won't be possible.

The garage has plenty of room, so they could have a huge cage if they want.

I've heard lots about the C&C cages on here and they sound fab, however, would they be suitable if the pigs are living in the garage through winter? Would I be better off buying a hutch?

If you can build it so it's off the floor then it will be fine. They can

You'll need to make sure you provide them lots of warmth during the winter months, and obviously you can't have a car in the garage with them.
 
Hi, Thanks for the reply.

Don't worry we've never had a car in there. it's used for storage and a pool table!

pleased to hear the C&C cage will be fine, would i wrap something around it and maybe make a roof over it for extra warmth in winter?
I just don't want to invest in this option then have to revert to a hutch in the long run if i get it all wrong :help:
 
Does anyone else have any advice, before I go ahead and purchase the bits?

Want to get them some more room ASAP

I used to keep mine in the utility room we had before our extension, that was garage sort of temperature with next to no insulation and I can't say I'd do it again if I had another option avaliable to me :soz:

In winter it got cold to the point where I didn't want to clean them out (I do this every day). Although they seemed fine, had loads of hay and always a massive blankie covering most of the cage at night to stop any draughts, I've noticed since they've been indoors at our temperature that they're so much happier. I'll always see them out in the middle of the cage instead of curled up inside their snuggly beds. Also, I now see them a lot more!

Is there a possibility they could have a cage in the garage for summer whilst it'll be around room temp and be moved inside during the winter months to make sure it isn't too cold? x
 
I too kept my piggies in the garage for a couple of months in the summer, come the winter it was freezing in there and I had to have a plug in heater on all day and all night.

I ended up relocating them in the house.
 
Yeah I thought no I secretly knew that answer.

My worktop is 62cm and a think 2 c&c panels would be something like 71cm. Would a 9cm overhang be ok or is that really unsafe?

If they were in the utility I could build a 4x2 with loft area, would this be ok for 2 boars?

I think if they were in a hutch in the garage they wouldn't get as much interaction
 
My piggies are going back into the utility room from my bedroom in the next month or so once Clover's recovered as she's poorly at the minute. It's been done up so it's all insulated now and room temperature!

I'm going to be building them a simple 150cm x 60cm cage - they're currently in a 120 x 60 ferplast so hopefully it'll be a bit bigger. Mine will be going on the utility worktop hence why it has to be 60cm wide and I couldn't get a C&C cage.

Hamsterhomes on etsy have a lovely looking cage, it's only 120 long but you could always enquire about a larger one if you wanted or do what I'm doing and do it yourself - I don't think it'll come in too expensive and I'll get my dad to do most of the work!

I think Ferplast also have a ferplast 160 that may also fit onto a worktop as I believe it's only 60cm deep? May be worth a look x
 
You could overlap the c and c grids so thatbit was the same width as your work top and cable tie them in place.
 
I thought of overlapping on the cages, or do 1 level on the other. They really are happier indoors, plenty of natural light, warmth. As you have probably guessed I am a avid piggy indoors fan. Lol
 
ok i've decided....

i've bought them a big run for the garden for when the weather is nice, then i'm going to do the c&c cage and overlap the bits i need to, so they are warm and cosy in the house.

Just need to sneak them past the otherhalf :sly:
 
You've got me thinking :hmm: (I know, it's scary!:))) but it's suddenly dawned on me as to why my first C&C setup was very narrow (it came with my rescued Chip & Dale) It must have been made to suit a worktop.

You could perhaps overlap the grids to make them narrower to fit the work top? A quick calc suggests that it would be 6 grids long for 2 boys. (214cm) would this be an option?

Thanks for working this out, there is a sink right in the middle of the worktop, so from memory I think I can only get 5. However we never use the sink, so I could remove the tap and pop some board over it and would prob get 6 maybe 7. I'll measure it up tomorrow.

Am I right in saying that even if I add some loft areas, they don't count towards the 'area' ?

Yep, that is correct. It's only the main area that counts. They need the space for zoomies and whatnot :) x

Garages being made of concrete seem to be very cold in winter, have you a shed you could insulate?
 
That's great, you'll love them there, won't worry about them and you can see them loads

We have outdoor piggies but bring them into garage in winter. Can't bring them indoors as my husband has serious allergic reaction to their dander. I need to find something that gives them more space in garage but not sure what's best as it can get chilly. I have snugglesafe pads and lots straw. Could I get c and c cage or should I he looking for a hutch. If I get hutch should I put run on it in garage?

This is a very old thread and I know you have started your own on the subject already. It is best to not resurrect old threads.

As we advised on your own thread that you started about this, c&c or any open cages are not suitable for a garage. You need a proper hutch. I added information on the type you need and information on how to make a playpen work in a garage on your thread.
Please don’t use straw for guinea pigs.
