Hi all,

What’re people’s thoughts on having grid roofs on C&C cages? Necessary or not?

My three girls live in a Kavee double layer C&C cage. The bottom layer is storage boxes, and the top is their cage. They must have grids covering their little (1x2, accessible by shallow ramp) ‘second floor’ bit, but other than that, in a standard height cage is a roof necessary?

It makes cleaning out such a pain! We don’t have any other pets so they’re not at risk of any other animals going into the cage, my concern is more would it be possible for them to jump or climb out? One because I don’t want any escapees, and two because they’re not on the floor they’re above their storage box layer it’d be a very long way for them to fall if they did.

I don’t know if it’s even possible for them to jump that high? I’ve never seen mine climb but that doesn’t mean they can’t!

I see so many set ups online that have no roofs and I wonder if it’s safe, or if it’s another online thing that looks nice but actually isn’t in the best interest or safety of the animals.

It’d also be nice to be able to pet them without unclipping the roof as usually by the time I’ve unclipped it the noise has startled them, and they’ve scarpered!

Thoughts?

For some piggies, yes it is necessary.

As you say the other pets element is removed but some piggies absolutely can jump that high, and some will definitely climb (I’ve got one who stands on the first bar and pokes his head over the top)
Really it’s going to be whether you feel it is safer to have it or not

Ugh. I expect for mine, it is needed then. Especially as they’ve got hideys that they like to sit on top of. They love a carrot cottage, with an extra exit cut out of the backside so they can’t ever corner each other!

Probably a case of not worth the risk. They’d almost certainly (at least) break bones if they fell from that height to the floor.

Might have a play with it and see if I can make an easy-access area rather than removing the roof!

Personally I would add grids for height on the back and sides if you're worried. That way you'll still have full access but feel reassured. Part of the beauty of c&c habitats.
It gets easier as you get to know your pigs. After separation Sir George got half grids at the front but Master Boris 🌈 couldn't be trusted not to fall out so his were 3/4 sized.

I have a lid on my c&c because I have a dog - it’s also on a stand
The lid is hinged so when open it rests against the wall
I think @fluffysal idea of higher grids in places sounds a good idea if it doesn’t make it harder to clean out

The photos show you my set up

I have hinged grids over my piggies apple stick houses. I hold them open with reversible cable ties when I'm
