hey there, i was just wondering if the coroplast base for c&c cages was absolutely necessary, I am moving into a new flat soon and want to upgrade my piggies from the hutch that they're in at the moment, but due to an arm injury I feel that the base of c&c cages would cause me an issue

so is there anything I can do to bypass the base or use instead, I currently also have them on woodshavings, which they seem to be fine with, but i dont mind having them on fleece, but is there anything to stop them smelling as quickly?

My piggies live in my shed but come indoors during summer due to the heat. When they come inside in their C&c cage, I don’t use a correx base (because storing It when not in use isn’t as easy). i use just a sheet of plastic which i bought off the roll from a garden centre. I then just lay puppy pads and then put fleece on top of them.
If you dont use a correx base in a c&c cage then switching to fleece would be easier because without a correx base and its upstand up the wide of the cage obviously all the shavings are going to come out.

In regards to the smell, well, they shouldn’t smell..
Do you spot clean daily? How often do you do a full cage clean? What sex are your piggies and what size cage are they in?

so I have 2 sows and the cage they are currently in a 122 cm long hutch with a playpen attached to it
cleaning is done on a weekly basis with wet bedding taken out whenever i see it (every 1-2 days)

i meant to say stop the fleece smelling as quickly, not the piggies :P

often any smells will be down to wet hay/bedding sitting for too long. Perhaps you could increase the spot cleaning/removal of wet areas to every day/a couple of times a day and see if that makes any difference.
