Hi
I was looking at getting a c&c cage from C and C Guinea Pig Cages | Guinea Pig Cages. I like the fact that I can get all the kit from one place, easy etc however I wanted to get a lid however if I have the lid it looks like the only option is to have the loft dropped down which makes the cage look cramped. I counted and you only get an extra 2 grids it looks like if you have the lid (but pay an extra £35) because the loft is dropped to share the grid. So now I'm thinking I might need to make my own.
I'm a bit daunted at the thought though.
I have seen some posts on getting grids from wayfair, and correx from ebay. Is this the best thing to do? Or should I just buy the kits because it won't feel too cramped with the dropped loft? Any advice much appreciated thanks

Hello, welcome to the forum :)

We got our cage from them too - great service :)

Any reason why you want a lid?

It's honestly not hard to build them yourself, I quite like it actually! I got 20 grids and about 16 connections off ebay for a tenner. I'd look there first as other places are usually more expensive. Plus the dropped loft sounds a bit cramped, but each to their own, I'm sure the piggies would love it either way

Thanks, I was thinking having the lid would be good because if I wanted to take it outside I'd feel happier having the lid. I was also a bit worried they might jump out? It doesn't look that high?

I would only take them outside in a secured run to be honest. C&C cages are not that portable as are flimsy, you'd be dismantling it all the time. It is nice to be able to get in and interact with them more without a lid, we found it really made our girls more tame.

Also if I got it from that company, whats the ramps made of? Are they reinforced in any way or are they literally just correx?

We have a cage from that company. You don't really need a lid unless you have a dog/cat or very small children? I don't think you could be moving it outside as they are big and not easy to move once assembled as the grid's slip out of the connectors (we have ours in a rug so we can slide it for cleaning etc) you need a separate outdoor run really. And no don't worry they can't climb out. The ramp is made from correx and has a nibble guard. It's very sturdy and they have no problems using it.

Random tip - if you find the cage flimsy and slipping out of connectors a lot, consider joining the grids with cable ties (zip ties) instead. I bought my grids sepatately and connected them all using only cables ties. Not only was it very easy its very sturdy too.

I am considering doing it myself then, it does work out cheaper, its only really the ramp I'm a bit concerned about. But if the one from that company is just correx and nothing else I could do that or make a wood one. I was thinking I would add cable ties to secure it.
I do have small children (5 year old, 3 year old and a 12 month old) but i was going to put them in the utility room so they can't just go in and out without me there.

I used a wall cat scratch post from zoo plus for my ramp and it worked perfectly. I cable tied it to the grids.

If you bend 2 grids and put correx into it with cable ties it works well and also gives the ramp sides so the piggies feel more secure climbing it. I'll try to find a pic of my old one to show you what I mean X

Also if you use cable ties to connect it to the top it will lift right up and sit in the top bit out of the way to make it easier for you to clean underneath the loft. Also good for when you are doing a full clean on the bottom part...the piggies can go up top and u just lift the ramp so they stay up there while you sort the bottom X

WOW.this is a lovely set up,where did you get the storage from?love the fleece, where did you get the grids .thanks Eileen.:luv:

The storage units were from ikea....really cheap! There were another 2 units behind the ones you see so in total there were 24 storage boxes which was great for the kids toys. Don't have them under the cage anymore as I built another cage underneath, but they were really handy and the cage was at a perfect height...although needed a little step to reach the loft X

I just want to add when bending the grids just be careful and make sure you don't bend the side there is a join on the c&c grid. As they snap. I did this making a hay rack from a grid. As long as the join is on the side that you don't bend u will be ok.

Hi was this recently as I can't find them that cheap, are they called something else?

i use these as i would grids . My piggy cages are on the floor so these are great. I have the white ones. Ordered new ones few weeks ago. Just as well as i will have to rejig my cages in a few weeks if all goes well
What are the measurements of these? Would my piggies be able to climb out of them?

The ramp is reinforced Correx with guard rails either side and a corrugated grip along it's slope. No need for any ramp tunnels unless of course you want to put some on it for the aesthetic value.
