Hi
Can i get some feed back on cabbage (all types) I have saw numerous times that cabbage is a no go then have seen that some types are fine can anyone shed any light? I am always wary when giving charlie new things as his diet was limited before coming into my care I always try and sample small portions but with cabbage I'm a bit more wary with seeing some many different opinions
HELP ;) Thanks

Cabbage is seen as a veggie that can cause bloat in the UK. In Sweden, where my piggies and I live it's seen as a good, cheap and local everyday veg with a pretty good vitamin c content.

My piggies get cabbage almost every day and are fine with it. Are your piggies sensitive to broccoli, kale and other "cabbagy" veg?

Cabbages can cause bloat with sensitive piggies. However, one (changing) variety of cabbage is a firm part of my "five veg a day" menu.

Kale should not be fed too often as it has a very high calcium content. same goes for spinach.

thanks for that
Charlie loves brocoli and seems fine with it
I'm still yet to try kale that is another one I will try him with (and alfie who eats anything at all)
He has a lot of variety I just havent tried cabbage or many lettuce as I have saw that some are not good for them so was wary maybe try just a very small amount and fingers crossed :)

I don't give mine cabbage purely because it makes their poops stinky and they live in the lounge not because it upsets their tummies greatly

I know how selfish am i to deny them.... rolleyes

it makes mine stinky they do not get broccoli as i but it frozen.... they occasionally get a small handful of kale if they are getting cleaned out the same day :))

hm, interesting...

kale is a christmas veg here so it's only in stores over christmas...

I might try a cabbage free week... but then my piggie's poops don't smell much as it is.

Mine are fine with any type of cabbage although it's definitely not their favourite - it always gets left 'till last and I get that 'do we have to eat that' look rolleyes

Mine love sweetheart cabbage at the moment but they go through phases with food so I try to keep them guessing. Does anyone feed red cabbage? I tend to only eat it in the summer when I'm into salads.

Ive tried mine with red cabbage and they didnt seem to like it! But i suppose its worth a try if you buy it for yourself anyway. :)

My two boys love kale and spring greens but they do only have them once a month and they gobble them up right away.:(|)

I'm sure that i read somewhere that you can feed kale daily? I'm sure it was on one of the diet stickys or threads, as someone was asking if there veg list was ok and I'm sure there was post saying you can feed it daily, anyone seen that?

:)

I try not to feed anything daily. I don't have a great feeding schedule like some forum folk do (no time, and not that organised :() but my plan is at least two veg/fruit at a time, two fresh feeds a day, and never the same veg / fruit twice in any 24 hours. So they get at least 4 diff veg / fruit every day.

they are happy enuff with cabbage - although its certainly not their favourite!

what different fruit and veggies do you all feed your piggies daily?

I'm new to owning piggies, (since Monday) and I know the owner before me only gave them either a carrot OR a cabbage leave between them daily. They also got no floor or run time EVER!:( but I've been giving them about a cupful of veggies (probably more) daily each, they love it, and has helped them warm to me, well Patch likes me anyway, licked my fingers the first time I picked him up to brush him :D (yep he is long haired and was never brushed either), Biscuit isn't too sure just yet...
Anyway, I've been given them a variety of chopped up carrot, cabbage, cucumber, swede, parsnips, celery once daily and then once a day I put a piece of fruit in there too, like apple or melon. is that too much?
I did vary the bowl of veggies with brussels and broccoli and peppers and tomatoes, they love brussels and broccoli, but wasn't too keen on peppers or tomatoes.

They seem to be ok on what I've been giving them, Think it is too much as there is always some left over...

But with what I'm doing can I be doing harm? I didn't introduce slowly... should I be?

any advice and tips greatly appreciated :)

I'm trying to get my head round the different veg you can give them, especially and as one of my guinea pigs died from bloat and another from a stomach infection, so i'm very cautious about giving them the 'gassy' veg.
After reading through past threads on the forum it seems it's all to do with the calcium/phosporous ratio. I still don't quite understand it all but someone posted a link to a website that is helpful, however it does say you can feed cabbage and kale daily which i'm not sure i'm going to do. Although I guess if you're giving them the correct weight of veg not and giving them too much of a particular veg it should be ok. I bought some digital scales today that are really going to help me measure the portion sizes!

There is also a very useful sticky on foods which are high and low in calcium, and which can be given daily, 2-3x a week and rarely :)
