Hi!

I'm a student, and all the time the cage is really clean.

but when it comes to my finals, I tend to have less time, and they are in my room.

I wonder if at a certain point it can be nocive for me in my room if it smeel a lot but I can tolerate it, and is it safe for the pet?

thx!

Hello. Welcome to the forum.

I am not sure what you are asking? Are you asking if you can have the cage in your bedroom?

do you mean you won't have time to clean them out? it wouldn't be very healthy for them, even if you could cope with the smell.

thx for both answer! actually biscandmatt answer half of my question, the rest is I also wonder since it's in my room if it can be dangerous for my health?

thx!

no not for your health but if the smell is bad enough where you're worrying about your health i would strongly consider thinking of the guinea pig's health . do you use fleece or bedding?

thx! I think about the guinea pig too, I put them in another cage which is clean enough, so only the smell can reach them. Is the smell dangerous for them even if not for me? Or it's the contact with the dirt?

Dirt is dangerous for your guinea pigs. How often do you clean the cage?

It won't be dangerous for your health, more so for your guinea pigs! They need to be cleaned AT LEAST once a week, more so if you have fleece.

it's not the smell that is dangerous sweetie it's the things that cause the smell . I'm sure you're an amazing person and love your piggies but they need a clean home and if i were you i would get a little dust pan and sweep it up once a day. if you have a large area of hay or you use bedding that could cause the smell because they're likely to poop in the hay and you usually can't see it. worry about the actual mess and clean it up and then the smell will follow behind it, can't have no smell when you have a mess ;)

thx a lot for the answer!

but I got the feeling I wrongly explained myself, I always clean them in 5 days at least, except during the exam, but I have 3 cage, then I do a rotation : 1st cage, then after a week, in the other clean cage, then after a week in the 3rd cage, and then my exam are finished and I clean all the cage and go back to a normal routine. So they are not in physical contact with the cage that is dirty. But the smell is there. What I'm worrying is if the smell can hurt them?

Really, if there's a smell, there's dirt. If there's dirt, it will be harmful to them. Once the smell is there, it is a signal it needs a clean.

the smell isn't pleasant there is something causing it, also if you're using 3 cages so you don't have to clean 1 out as much it will probably smell worse because they will have to go to the bathroom wherever they are so not only 1 smelly cage but 3 . i find it easiest to have the cages i need and spot clean them daily and wash their fleece every weekend. do you use fleece bedding or wood shavings?

I know how hard finals are and how stressful they are but surely moving them between 3 cages and having to set them up each time and move the pigs and the food bowls and all the toys and things must be harder than just cleaning out one cage.

I have 4 pigs between 2 two story hutches and they both have an outside run each and I can strip 2 whole hutches and relay them and rake the outside within 10 minuets.

I honestly think youre creating more time and effort for yourself. I dont know what you use now but say if you lay the cage with news paper and then with hay, all you have to do is roll up the paper with all the poops and hay and throw it away.

If you keep putting your guinea pigs in new cages you will unsettle them. They need to be in one cage. Wood shavings need to have wet bits removed daily not just once a week. Are you giving them daily exercise time too? This is very important.

With wood shavings, the poo get's flicked around and is burried under, even spot cleaning twice a day the wet bits, isn't enough. I personally find fleece much better.

it's understandable to get behind once in a while we are not perfect we are all humans, but to bring new living beings in your home you have to think not only for yourself but for them, i am 17 and used to go out constantly now i can't even stay out all night with out worrying or missing my piggies so i changed my lifestyle (it's awesome to hear you're studying though (; ) just make as much time possible for them, you're going to have to clean their messes that's why some including myself use the term "guinea slave" i hope you fix your issue it would be helpful to know what kind of bedding you use! if you have anymore questions don't be afraid to ask if you want you can message me as well

Every time you put them in a new cage you are risking then falling out and you then have two cages to clean out instead of one. I have large c& c cages with litter trays. The litter trays get changed every two days and the main fleece once a week. The smaller bits of fleece and towel get changed when wet.If they are in commercial cages cleaning out shouldn't take long. I have two rat cages and three hamster cages that I can do in an hour

by the time you've moved them around, you could have cleaned the cage anyway :)) it doesn't take that long really. :)

I find it easier and quicker to do a complete clean out everyday! When Tilly came to me, she had urine scald on her little feet due to not being cleaned out frequently enough. Piggies do seem to produce an amazing amount of wee!
