baby-wilson

Hey... as you all probably know cindy is pregnant! I am going to keep 2 of her babies (a male and female) as friends for wilson and cindy. I want to keep them in the same cage but i need to be able to seperate the males from the females. So i need a big cage room enough for up to 4 pigs that i can keep indoors or outdoors. If anyone has any ideas or designs feel free to share! Thanks!

if you do a cage with argos grids, you could just have some grids seperating one half from the other? seems like the easiest solution.

make a big cc cage and divide it with some more grids.

//EDIT: should have switched my brain on before posting:

You are going to keep a group of females next to a group of males? do you think this will work out? If the boys will smell the females, they will most likely fall out with each other and start fighting.

hmm... never thought of that... i agree. When i have help cindy and then hold wilson he goes crazy over her scent and when i hold him up in front of her cage he goes crazy too... but he is on the bottom level and cindy is on the topat the moment and there is no real drama... so i would have to probably have two seperate cages? :( Thanks!

I have seen setup where it worked if the girls where on a different level than the boys, so that they couldnt see each other at all.
the owners also took special care to wash their hands after handling the girls etc.

but another thought: why dont you make it easy for yourself, and get the boys neutered? they you could have a boy and a girl in each group, they boys would be happy and you dont have to worry about fights etc.

I got told that neutering pigs is very dangerouse andthere is a big risk of losing them... and that is is putting too much stress on them but most of you guys have had your boars neutered hey? Does neutering them change their personality of behavior or anything?

Ulrike do they have any more grids in yet at Argos?

i like c+c cages, and would keep changing them around if I had ondoors piggies
;D

I was thinking c+c so i could set it up in the lounge or somthing because there is alot of activity in there and it might make them more used to us. And i think those cages would be easier to clean and easier to get the pigs out lol! Thanks heaps guys! When i finally get the stuff i need and build it ill post pics lol! Thanks!

You also need to be careful with the grids if you have baby piggies. The gaps are big enough that they can get their head stuck so you need to either make the walls taller or look for the mesh grids.

Thanks for that... do you use cloroplast as the floor, thats easy to make the walls taller hey lol! Thanks!

Havent a clue.. but there are still some around on ebay afaik, and B&Q apparently do similar grids aswell, so it should be possible to build some more CC Cages.

About neutering:

There is always a risk, it is an operation, all operations have risks. I have heard of freak accidents where the stitches opened and the piggy died in a nasty way, but this is probably one out of ten or even less.
Neutering is almost a routine operation nowadays, and doesnt involve alot of risk. It will never be risk free -

but if the piggy is healthy, over 500g heavy, and his bits are ready and grown enough to be chopped, there shouldnt be much going wrong.
I do think its the kindest thing to do for a male piggy, as they are the happiest if they have some girls around them.
They might be happy with other boars, but a girl is just something way better. Everyone who has seen the excitement of a randy boar will agree with me, I think.

The behaviour doesnt change. Some say they get calmer, but I dont think thats true, the neutered piggies I have known were pretty much exactly the same after the operation.

I think i might look into that... wilson just want cindy soo bad and i feel bad seperating them... also then i dont have to have two seperat cages lol... can you have two girls with two neutered boars?

Thanks again guys!

no.

Neutered or not, boys will always fight over girls.
Two or more boys with any amount of girls will NOT work.
Think about your own life - do you think you could live in a house with two boyfriends without them arguing?

the neutering is really only to ensure you wont have unwanted babies.

one male + one female (or even better a group of several females).

so one female to a male... say i have the baby girl with cindy one week then cindy with wilson the next week... do you think that would work or not? Thanks heaps guys you have really helped! :D

EDIT: I dont think i could handle living with two guys lol!
