I'm a New Guinea pig owner (its actually my daughter that they belong to but I obviously help a great deal). We've had them 3 weeks and so far only have the basics that came with the cage. I've been giving them plenty of hay for bedding (although they tend to eat most of it)but noticed a lot of pictures of guinea pigs using fleeces. Are these safe? I've seen a few on eBay but can't recall seeing them in my pets at home store.
Advice on other cage items would also be appreciated, toys etc.
Our guinea pigs live indoors and are still very shy. I'm planning to go on the hunt for cage items this weekend so would be good to know what I'm looking for

Hello :) Welcome to the forum.

Congratulations on your new piggies. In our cage we have a hidey each and a chube http://www.amazon.co.uk/Giant-Chube...la/dp/B0037XQ31C/ref=pd_sim_sbs_petsupplies_3 We put most of the piggie toys in the run at run time, as to keep them always in their cage would take up lots of space. Ours have so things like hay tubes which are edible and Cosies http://www.cavycouture.co.uk/ these are great for piggies, Snuggle sacks go down very well.

As regards to Fleece as a bedding you can give it a go, get it from somewhere like poundstretcher. Fleece needs washing 3-4 times before the first use so it will wick away the wee. Line the cage with newspaper and then a towel before placing fleece on top. Lots of people use it and swear by it, its a popular choice.
Lots of info on bedding can be found in the Housing section of the forumhttp://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?9-Housing We are not huge fans of fleece and only use it for our special needs piggie but everyone is different.

Here's a few stickies that may help

Be great to see photo's of your piggies, if you wanted to share them you would need a free photobucket account from www.photobucket.com and follow the instructions on this tutorial, its easy to do :) http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/...ial-Posting-Pictures-In-Threads-(Photobucket)

One final thing if you can pop you location in your profile that would be great, just means if we ever need to target any advice to you we can tailor it to the area in which you live.

Hi Karen,

Guineas love cardboard tubes stuffed with hay if you cut the tube with slits though as their heads might get stuck. Mine love cardboard boxes as they can chew them and they do love flicking them about to where they want them to be. The boxes with the orange juice cartons in at the supermarket are good as they have each end already open and they are free.

Mine are quite boring and don't entertain the toys. mallethead

aah, just thought they love the fleece cut into long strips so they can go in and out for cover, fleece forests for guineas is their technical name lol.
