Hello - I am a new guinea owner and have had them for 2 weeks. All going great so far and I love them but having read lots about bedding and cage coverings on here I decided to get a fleece cage liner. The problem I have is both guineas keep getting underneath it and screwing themselves up in it - how can I stop them or what am I doing wrong?
 
My boar Six will find any 'weakness' in fleece and burrow under it - when he was younger he would work for days pulling at the fleece to try and find a way underneath! He will also chew on the correx if he can get to it which is a nightmare!

How I countered this is a I made my own fleece liners which fold up over the side of the cage bottom (I have a C&C cage) AND I peg the fleece on as well.
 
Yeh - at the moment I have a standard pet shop cage so can't do that with the fleece. Thanks though x
 
i think if they are determined then you can't really stop them :roll: - some cage liners come with edges that go over the correx though and hammocky hammocks quilt their liners to prevent burrowing. perhaps look into those options :)

hammocky hammocks liners have been by far the best quality from my experience :)

I've got a shop bought cage and have managed to trap the fleece between the bottom of the bars and the top of the plastic base.

To make it up, I take the metal bars part of the cage off the plastic base, put in towels to the bottom of the plastic base, drape the fleece over that so it goes over the edges of the plastic base then put the metal bars part of the cage back on top.
 
Thank you - I have only got an ebay purchased cage liner that is slightly too big but not big enough to go over the plastic sides but might consider that - would really love a C&C cage but not sure we have the room for it and also have 2 dogs and a cat so would need to be other animal proof ! The shop cage is on a stand and is fully enclosed so ideal really - just the problem with bedding ! wood chip they flick out everywhere, alternative bedding is expensive so thought the fleece would be ideal but it won't stay down. Might have to get my mum involved (very good seamstress) to make a liner for me x
 
I have fleece liners with absorbent middle layer in our c&c set up (we've got 3 groups of piggies!). I do really like them best of all so it probably would be worthwhile investing your money/time in.

As either a cheap or short term solution, what I was describing in the shop bought cage just uses a really cheap fleece blanket I bought from the Range as the fleece layer and then the separate old towels below do the absorbing. It works just as well as the all in one "proper" cage liners.
 
Do you need to have something underneath vetbed ?
 
yes,you need to place an absorbant layer,towelspuppy pads,mattress protectors.whatever suits you best to absorb moisture.vet bed is easy to use,need to wash every 3 days,but dries in 20 mins!good luck.
 
Vet bed is good but won't stop the 'burrowing'. Some piggies seem to make it heir life's mission to disrupt the cage and others don't care at all. One of my pairs will always find a way under but usually only in hot weather. Hamish has very sensitive eyes and dislikes strong daylight so his first act if it gets bright is to go under the vet bed. Angus does it too but usually just to be a menace. The other pair have never bothered with it.

Vet bed is a bit heavier than fleece though so harder to pull up but much more expensive to start with. In saying that I have two sets (one in the wash and one in use) and they easily last 2-3 years before needing replaced and that's with some very messy boars!
 
Thanks everyone - I have purchased some vet bet to try and just have to wash and cut to size. I've also got puppy pads (as they were on offer) and towels to try underneath to absorb wee wee's. My boys seem to love climbing and jumping on top of their houses and wooden arch etc so thinking of trying to put a mezzanine level in with a ramp to give them some more interest and space! Loving the website for ideas and advice - loving having piggies x
