Cage Size if no run

Hi,

Just wondering - my OH is tempted to make a guinea pig 'room' and we were wondering what you think the C&C size should be (minimum/ reccomended) if we were going to give them a room but no floor time - so the room and cage would be big enough for enough for all stimulation. We have two chonky boars.

This isn't a 100% plan but it's curiosity and whether it would be good for them?

I was thinking no smaller than 5x4 but I cant really visualise it and could see how it would be better to be bigger! p.s. not in the business of piggie cruelty & more than happy to do a run every day - but its likely a cage in their room would be larger than any run we could provide outside of it (the run would probably be about 4x4), if that makes sense! We are also considering a cage and run together in the room, separated by a "door".

Is that 5ft x 4ft? I believe the ideal size for two boars is 12 square foot and up, but the more space the better, so 20 square foot sounds like piggy heaven!

With a cage that size or larger I doubt you would need to put them in a run or give them floortime, that's more than enough space for them to roam and run about. Personally I think larger cages are much better than a smaller cage and floortime/runtime because the piggies can use the space whenever they please.

They sound extremely lucky and I'd love to see the room when it's done. My boys have a C&C 12 foot square but I'd love to do them a room like that when I get my own house.

You just need to give them as much space as you possibly can - for two boars thats a 5x2 c&c cage but of course anything on top of that is great!
Its a good idea to give them time out of their normal cage so I do like the idea of a run being separated by a door, that way it’s another area for exploration but not constantly accessible

My boys live in a two storey hutch in my shed. The hutch does not have a ramp between the two levels so they get locked upstairs at night. Their ‘bedroom’ hutch is 6ft x 2ft (so equivalent to a 5x2 c&c). During the day they get put downstairs which comprises the bottom part of the hutch and extending out into the shed which gives them 6ft x 6ft of playspace (equivalent of a 5x5 c&c). This works really well for them, gives them plenty of space whichever area they are in and means they get time out of their ‘bedroom’ every day.

I have a 5x 2 cage with 4x2 extension to make an L shape.
This seems to be fine for my herd of 1 boar and 2 sows.
They do get offered floor time but rarely ever choose to come out.

My boars have a 3x4 c&c cage and get floor time once a week I think it's important for them to have a change of scenery occasionally and it gives me time to do a propper cage clean

These cage sizes sound great what lucky piggies everyone has! Love seeing pictures and hearing about everyone's cage designs! I've recently made a guinea pig room that the guinea pigs kindly share with my boyfriend in the mornings when he gets dressed for work as I do not like being disturbed too early! This is a 6 x 6.5 equivalent originally a C&C but changed it as there was no need for grids around the walls. It takes up about 70% of the room. I don't actually give my guinea pigs floor time and I feel bad for this. Just find it hard with safe spaces and have carpet upstairs. is floor time essential for my herd of 5 with their cage size? Have meant to ask this before. And good luck with your new cage design can't wait to see pics!
