Cage sizes

For the moment, I’m just giving them as much floor time as possible and hopefully they will Show the behaviours slightly earlier than normal, if that ever happens! That would mean that I can monitor them whilst I’m not working and hopefully get a bigger cage with my parents permission!

As a working adult, I appreciate you’re in your parents house, but providing them with enough space regardless of their hormonal behaviours, is so important for their well-being. If they get out of their teens unscathed, then that is great, but it doesn’t mean their cage is big enough for a boar pair

I do however have some good news. My mum was on the phone talking about the situation with her friend. The friend bought up Perspex screens to catch bedding that’s being kicked out. My mum said she didn’t want to do anything yet as we may have to change the cage in the next week or 2. This is a step closer. They have identified we need a bigger cage so will need to upgrade sooner rather than later

The worst thing that will happen is that when they start showing the behaviours, I will have them temporarily living in the playpen whilst we order a larger cage.

What are the measurements of the playpen?

It’s not very convenient however they are spending the majority of the day in it - give or take an hour or 2. The room is an odd shape that the playpen doesn’t fit in well enough so for the moment as it’s not an issue now, they’re living in the cage from about 7/8pm-9am approximately. My parents know but won’t admit they need more space however in a week or so will soon realise we must upgrade

Theyre getting sick of me asking them so much about it. 😂😂

it’s more likely to happen if i stop going on about it so need to control myself!

meanwhile, is there any tips you can give on arranging the cage so they have a running space at the front?

Unfortunately in a cage of that size you are very limited on how to arrange it. Perhaps get rid of all food bowls and hay trays so they can have just hay all over the floor of the cage and so the floor space isn’t taken up with items. All you really need is a hidey each in the cage

Thanks for the tip! Their hay rack takes up no room as it’s on the outside of the cage through the bars and and currently experimenting with room!

Apart from the ferplast 160, are there any other cages on the market that size that are not C&C cages. My parents are against them for some reason which i need to respect.

My parents ‘so called’ checklist of what the cage must include is a solid floor and roof as well as looking somewhat nice. Thanks

to my knowledge, the ferplast plaza 160 is the only commercial cage of that size. youve got pretty much no choice but to get the ferplast 160 with having boars and not being able to have a c&c

The advantage of a C&C is you can do the layout however you want, as long as it meets their minimum needs. So you could build it round an L shape. And you could build it on a stand (using grids) and use the underneath for storage. You can use correx for the base of it as well.

Are you working or still at school?

I’m still at school so not in the whole day. Am giving extra attention whilst I’m off for Christmas break. I then have a week of online school due to COVID rules so am off for 3 weeks. Hopefully, they will soon show these behaviours and we can upgrade whilst i can give them this attention. Since I’ve been awake, they’ve spent about 2hrs in their cage and the rest having floortime. I’d be fine with a c and c cage but my parents aren’t for some reason 🤷

The 160 would be the biggest i can go. Would it be a good size if i can give 3hrs of exercise a day?
They have 2 hides and most of the time, go in the same one as each other. They seem to be fine to share but i still give them the option

As we have said if you can only get a commercial cage then the 160 is your only option. It is below our recommendations of 180cm but it is just above minimum of 150cm for two boars so in that respect it’s fine.

I do wonder if you are slightly misinterpreting what we are saying though - you are going to see dominance behaviours throughout their entire lives even if they have a huge cage as it’s just what piggies do. What we are saying is that being in a cage which is too small can cause them to fall out due to lack of space (although character compatibility comes first In a successful bond) (you seem to be looking for them to show dominance behaviours as a way to get them a bigger cage and that’s fine, but being in a bigger cage isn’t going to stop dominance) if they fall out due to lack of space then it’s can sometimes be too late to get them a bigger cage as their bond can be broken before you even get that far.

Ohhhhh, thanks so much. That makes more sense. I thought that large cages meant less dominance.

No it doesn’t mean that at all. Mine have access to 36 sq ft but they love nothing more than showing dominance, it’s what boars do. Their large cage size means they can get away from each other but also have plenty of space to exercise. Two piggies, if they don’t like each other, will fall out in a big cage as well, it’s just that being in a small cage can lead to and exacerbate problems. This is why we said you need to get them into as big a cage as possible as quickly as possible. If you wait until problems shows then it can be too late.

What year are you in?

So you used the incorrect year when registering? This forum is for 18+ for a reason...

Oh my goodness. I had no idea there was an age limit on the forum. I’m very sorry, i best not use it - i really had no idea... 😢

I'm pretty sure it says so in the forum rules which you agreed to when you signed up. And why would you have used a fake DOB anyway?
