Hi people,
Me and my fiancee currently have 2 male piggies who live in a 4x2 with 2x1 loft and in the New Year we plan on upgrading to a 6x2 with x2 2x1 lofts. We would like to get 2 females but I was wondering if it is possible to have 2male and 2female living together, if so which are easier to get neutered?

I don't want to have to have 2 separate cages (apart from the time where you have to keep them separated till they know each other)

Hiya :) I really think it depends on the various personalities at play as to whether they would all get on - more often than not a pair of previously bonded boys fall out over girls, regardless of whether or not they have been neutered, but that's not to say they definitely would. The safest way would be to arrange a bonding session at a reputable rescue.

In terms of neutering, boys are much easier and far less risky to operate on. Spaying (for sows) is very invasive and usually only done as a matter of life or death.

If you do decide to neuter your boys, please be aware that they are not considered 'safe' for at least 6 weeks post-op! Do you have a trusted vet who could carry out the surgery?

Sorry to bombard you but I hope this helps :)

No don't be sorry that is great advise. From what I've been told we may be better getting a couple more boys instead. I'm just hoping they would get along as I want 1 large cage not 2 smaller ones.

Also we have a vet in our local Pets@Home but I don't know if they neuter

Bonding can be so difficult, @Wiebke is good on this kind of stuff so I've tagged her in :)

The vets in P@H will charge you a ridiculous amount - trust me. Have a look at the vet locator above ^ :)

Welcome, good luck with your piggies!

If you read through some of the threads on here, you will see that a lot of people have trouble keeping 2 or 3 boars together. 4 will definitely not work out. How old are your 2 boars? Have they reached their hormonal stage yet? This is when the fighting starts and they have to be separated. You could get your 2 boars neutered and then get each of them a female, but each pair would still have to be separate from the other.

I would not risk adding more boars to an already bonded pair as they will fall out. With boars it is best to have a pair or one neutered with one or more sows.

Hi Danny, its great that you are thinking of getting more piggies, l agree that you are likely to run into problems having more than 2 boars in a group and definitely they are likely to fight if there are sows around. If you do want to consider more pigs, please get in touch, l foster for Barnsley animal rescue and am based in Sheffield. We have lots of piggies needing good homes. I can also recommend a vet for neutering. Barbara

I've recently adopted 2 more boars (already have 2) and these 2 alone don't get on as well as I would like. I don't think I will even bother trying to introduce them as Galaxy and Nibbles get on so well that I'd hate to ruin it! If you were to get another 2 if I were you I'd stick to 2 separate cages.. Good luck what ever you chiose
