I have two rodents who are brothers and about 3 ½ years old. They live indoors in a large pen lined with thick bouncy newspaper and hay (probably not brilliant for easy movement). 3 days ago one of them has started jumping along like a kangaroo bouncing with his back feet together and not taking strides like you would if you’re walking. I’ve looked at both legs and there’s nothing obviously wrong with either, I’ve been watching his movement closely and he can take strides with both legs, he isn’t limping on one but he’s preferring to jump like a kangaroo instead of move how he usually does and I don’t know why.

His claws were long so I thought it could be related to that so I cut them pretty short but that made no difference. He’s eating fine though I think he’s spending a bit less time being out in the open eating treats with the other, he seems to be spending a bit more time hiding in his hideyholes though he’ll come charging out in excitement when I’m giving grass. & he can move at speed still but it’s always with this new weird kangaroo jumping technique. Anyone any ideas or experience of this?

It’s probably not related but he’s had either cystitis or bladder stones in the past but hasn’t shown any signs of this for months. Also a few months ago his willy came out and wouldn’t go back in for several hours a couple of times. I think it was due to debris being on it, I gave it a good soaking and cleaning and it hasn’t stayed out again since. Seen it out once since but it disappeared back in without a problem. I’ve given him a good looking over around that area and again there’s nothing to see, nothing unusual, no smell.

I’m hoping he’s just strained himself somehow and he’ll get back to normal soon but at the back of my mind I’m wondering about a tumour inside of him or some infection or swelling in his insides causing him walking discomfort but surely there’d be other symptoms? Thoughts please people.

sounds like pop corning...

but if your worried you should take them to the vets...

as no one on here can actually diagnose anything as none of us are vets... :)
(though sometimes i think this place knows more than some of them... lol)

so... sounds like hes just happy... but if its a recent change of behaviour... its probably best to get him checked...
good luck

Vitamin C deficiency can cause stiffness in joints, due to bleeding in the joint. Pigs are often called 'hoppers' when this occurs. Though as he has had bladder problems I would investigate Vit D toxity too, it can cause weakness in the bones as it removes calcium from the body. So a trip to a very cavy savvy vet is needed and perhaps a review of the diet.

What feed are you using at the moment?

Nope, they do popcorn sometimes but his kangaroo behaviour is something totally different.

That’s why I’ve come online first cos my vets seem pretty useless usually.

Interesting, there could be something in this.

My rodents have been getting spoilt rotten treat-wise for ages. The one with the kangaroo problem has a slice of apple a day to himself and they share a big chunk of carrot, they have about half an orange or satsuma, about 3 or 4 cauliflower leaves and a bowl of grass daily. & they have the occasional melon or banana or cucumber, sometimes the black one (with the problem) will nibble on the other ones tomato which he has daily and I feed them grapes and broccoli almost daily though I try not to over-do it with green things as I read they tend to make cystitis/bladder stones worse. & they have a constant supply of Excel pellets and eat the hay all the time. I can’t imagine they’d be lacking in any vitamins or minerals but perhaps they get too much?

Well the diet certainly doesn't seem to be the cause. LOL It's common in pigs fed on rabbit food as the vit levels are completely wrong for piggies.

How was the diagnosis for his bladder problems found? If it was behavioural, ie squeaking/grunting when toiletting or getting soaked in urine underneath, I would now associate that with these new symptoms and check for arthritis.

If you don't have much confidence in your vet, you could try these,

I thought about arthritis myself but figured they’re too young.

They squeak whilst peeing. It tends to come and go, the one that’s fine (not kangarooing around) is squeaking whilst peeing at the mo though not with every pee. He tends to be the one which suffers more often with it. Baytril has never had an effect and the vet won’t prescribe septrin. There’s no wetness underneath and they don’t smell.

Cool. Might be a bit far but it’s worth considering I guess.

Conclusion to strange kangaroo-like hopping: -

Must have just been down to an injury that my rodent picked up.

He improved over a couple of days and now doesn’t do it at all.

I’ve been watching him closely and I’m pretty sure it’s case closed now on this one.
