Hi,
For the last few days I have noticed one of my girls acting strange.

She spends a lot of her time lying down covering her head with the hay and sleeps a lot more than usual. I thought this was because it is so warm at the moment, I recently moved them out of my room (warmest room in the house) to downstairs which is much cooler. She also seems to be a bit bloated. Her sister is completely fine. Her appetite is unaffected and she is still drinking plenty of water. I feed them guinea pig nuggets to avoid selective feeding, add vitamin drops to their water, they get plenty of hay and I subsitute their food for fresh vegetables 3 times a week. They get plenty of attention and are out of their cage for a few hours everyday (always with a supply of water). I have also noticed that her personality has changed, she used to be quite the attention seeking little princess but now when I try to pick her up she runs away.

I am taking her to the vet first thing on Friday morning (this is the only time I can take her as that is when I get paid) and she doesn't seem to be in any pain or discomfort.

I was just wondering if anybody has any idea of what I can do in the meantime?

She will be 2 years old in November.

I have always had guinea pigs and I have never had any issues in my 13 years experience, they have always lived long, healthy, happy lives and the idea that something could be wrong is killing me :(

Thank you in advance!

Sorry to hear this. While we wait for a health and illness guru to answer this post, it would be useful to have some more information.

Can you give us some idea of your location - country and county would be useful e.g UK / US .
How long have you had your guinea pigs ? Are you happy they have been properly seed and are the same gender ?
I notice you say she looks bloated . Guinea pigs can get a condition called bloat. If you suspect she has bloat - she really needs to be seen by a vet straight away.

I too am thinking bloat, when you tap her sides does her tummy sound hollow at all? if so she needs the vet as soon as possible. Have you fed her any different veg lately? When you say you substitute their food with veg 3 times a week, do you mean their dry food only or their hay aswell?

Hi guys, it definitely isn't bloat, I had a rabbit who unfortunately died from that condition so I am always on the look out, she looks really chubby as if she has put weight on but she isn't eating any more than usual and when I touch her it just feels like shes chubby, it isn't hard or hollow sounding or anything like that.

I live in Belfast in Northern Ireland. I have had them since they were 8 months old, both definitely female.

I don't substitue their hay because not only do they eat it but they make wee beds and stuff out of it

I also clean their cage out every 2 days.

My friend thinks it is just too warm and that is why she is actung strange and the bloated look is because she isn't running around as much so maybe she is just getting a bit chubby.

Thank you so much for replying :)
