Batgirl

A few weeks ago, I was posting on here about my big pig, Dexter, being poorly. He had a runny nose, was lying on his side, his breathing was shallow and he would hardly eat or drink.

The vet gave me antibiotics to give him, and I tried getting more Vitamin C in his diet. Something must have worked, because he was his good old self for a few weeks.

However, this illness seems to have returned, far, far worse than before. Trips to and from the vet have been completely in vain, no one seems to know what's wrong with him. He won't move, he just lies on his side, and I've been getting vitamins into him via a syringe. He's back on antibiotics too, but I'm not keen to keep this up, it seems to give him diarrhoea, and he's not drinking a lot, so I'm worried he'll get further dehydrated.

He's lost so much weight...someone on here must have seen this before, someone must be able to help me? He's only two and a half, and I can't just sit here and watch him die.

Please, anyone, I don't know what to do.

I can't offer any advice on poor Dex. Just wanted to send you a {{hug}} and hope you and Dex get through this together. Hopefully someone experianced will be along soon to offer some good advice. x

Sorry Dexter is so unwell again. Just a few questions that might help link anything up in my mind...

- Has he been drinking well or been given any injections of fluid?
- Can the vet confirm whether there is any fluid in the lungs?
- What antibiotics has he been on?
- Are you syringe-feeding him? (Can email you a factsheet if it would help?)
- Is he able to swallow?
- Has he ever had a fungal skin infection?

It sounds like he's really being hit by this illness. One thought that has come to mind, depending partly on your responses above, is heart problem - some more info can be found here:- http://www.guinealynx.info/heart.html

i would also hold off with exra vit c if he has the runs,he will get what he needs from the recovery feeds..

my own mixture of recovery feed is..this was use on my own guinea pig following a stone op..and it helped him after his gut slow down and he wouldnt eat xx

some banana,some cabbage,some tomato,bit apple,grass,and lots of hay,probiotics..

Burgess excel pellets add boiling water to it,wait 15 mins then add more water wait again 15 Min's until the pellets wont take anymore water.then mix so its a smooth same textured paste..add this to the veg add all this into a blender and add 5 oz or water from the kettle cool boiled water and blend for around 10 Min's until there is no lumps...you can also add recovery or CC feed to it instead of the pellets

store the rest in the fridge it will last 24 hours...

while he has the runs just continue with either the recovery feeds and mushed pellets buy the blackcurrant and oregano one..

but its important he also has probiotic,he may also need some gut stimulants from the vets as if poss through lack of eating his gut has stopped working..

you need to syringe feed every 2 hours get in about 20 mls every 2 hours or the above..

Thank you so much for all the advice, you were all a great help.

Dexter fought so hard, but I lost him on Monday morning. He fought so hard to stay with us, but in the end, he didn't have the energy.

I loved him so, so much. My house and my family won't be the same without him. I miss him so much, I never stop thinking about him. I don't know what to say. He was my biggest boy, the cuddliest little pig ever.

Thank you again for all the advice and well wishes, although it didn't end well, advice and suggestions really did help me to calm down through the last few days.

x

I'm so sorry to hear your sad news. Poor Dexter - RIP little man.
