i get meadow hay from dustfreehay.co.uk, both the soft and stalky varieties for my rabbits so when i got the piggies i used this aswell for them. they have the soft for their bed and soft and stalky to eat.

they like it but i ran out once so got them oxbow western timothy hay from the vets to last and they love it. the problem is that i hate it. it's basically a bag of dust and small pieces. they eat it lots but cough when they do so now i don't know what to do. i don't want them having that because it's dusty and horrible.

does anyone know any other timothy hay that is good quality and not dusty?

Dust Free Hay do a timothy one as well as the meadow, but my piggies didn't like it. Most do though, I think - might be worth a try? It works out expensive though - Oxbow is cheaper in large quantities.

i gave them more of the stalky meadow hay before and they seem to prefer that to the soft.

i ordered them some excel herbage from the hay experts before because i used that a few years ago once and it seemed ok. i got them a sample taster pack aswell to try so i'll see if they have a favourite out if those.

maybe i just got a bad batch of the oxbow hay this time. it was so horrible. the bag was just about 3/4 full of dust! i got the bigger pack last time and that wasn't as bad so i could try that again i suppose, because they love that hay.

i could try the timothy hay from dustfreehay aswell. it's so expensive though! but it would be worth it if they liked it.

i'll see how they get on with the herbage first. i prefer dust free hays though really.

:)

Oh no, you're not wrong about the Oxbow timothy - it's very dusty and I always begrudge how much I have to throw away. To be honest, I wish I'd never started my piggies on Oxbow years ago, as once they've had it, they don't want to go back to anything else! rolleyes:)) It all started with my first piggies, then as others were introduced, they have had Oxbow too. They will eat the dust free stalky meadow hay a little, like yours, but I could never switch them over fully from the Oxbow.

Another one to try is the West Wales Willows timothy.

I have been giving Alfalfa King's Timothy Hay a try. It is very green and sweet smelling and though it's dry and coarse (good for teeth!) it's not dusty and my pigs love it!

None of mine really seem to like Timothy Hay to eat. I use meadow hay for bedding, and a bit of nibbling, and Scratch and Newton Meadow Hay with camomile and dandelion for in their toilet rolls and socks so they always have something fresh and nice to eat. xx

well they have finished off all the oxbow timothy hay now and i have been giving them just dust free hay, both soft and stalky...and they're eating it! so that's good! i have ordered some excel herbage aswell and some sample bags of different hays, these should come tomorrow, so that will add some variety for them. so i'm going to stick with the dust free hay and just add a different treat every week or two, like mix herbs and other hays with it aswell. hopefully they will like that! :)
