For the past month I have been battling to get my guinea pigs healthy, some of you might remember my other posts about URIs and fungal.

One of my boys was showing symptoms of a URI (runny nose). He didn't have crusty eyes, abnormal breathing, ruffled coat, lethargy etc, but the vet put him on Bactrim as a precaution. His friend however had no symptoms, but both boys were treated just in case.
After the full course of antibiotics (2 weeks) his nose was clear....for about a week and a half. And now it's come back! The vet was certain it wasn't a URI! The boys have had fungal for 2 months now and NOTHING is making it go away. I sterilize everything, Malaseb bath them. Honestly I feel at this point, after 2 months that I should give them to a new home. Clearly my whole house is contaminated with the fungus because they just WON'T GET BETTER!. I am at my WITS END. I don't want to give my little boys away but I feel like after everything I've done I just can't get the contamination or whatever has caused the fungus out of my home and so long as they stay here they can't get better.

The snotty nose is the thing that is probably the most concerning and I am wondering whether it is associated with fungal infections. I have tried different bedding and only one boy has a runny nose - and it's on and off. It seems to be the worst when they are outside in their outdoor enclosures. At night they sleep in my room and seem fine! I use fleece bedding and it has never given them this problem before.

Has anyone had a similar problem? I cannot figure out what's giving him the runny nose! And I have NO IDEA what can be done about the fungal. Is there a special oral medication I can suggest to the vet to give them? I honestly feel at this point after how much cleaning and sterilizing I have done, that this fungal is not going to go away. EVER EVER EVER UGHH. Sorry people but I am at the point where I want to rip out my hair with madness.

Oh and I forgot to add, there are tiny white bits of fungus all around his nose! I have no idea how to treat this area! I used Betadine on the fungus on his ears and that went away fast, but I don't know what to do about the nose since there is fur in that area! That's why I'm starting to think it's the fungal causing his runny nose - since the fungal things are near his nose :(

First of all I would strongly recommend you do not keep changing the boys from indoors to outdoors. This is a sure fire way to give URI.
Secondly have you tried anything from Gorgeous Guineas? http://www.gorgeousguineas.com/ they can give you advice on what to use and it's gentler on pigs skin than medicated anti fungals.

I have a boar who is just like this. I spent hundreds of pounds on the boy trying to sort him out and even placed a camera up his nose but to no prevail. He still has one snotty nose.

Fungal may well cause a runny nose if it is in his nares. Have you tried imavarol for the external fungal infection? Its very effective and i use it all the time for small outbreaks in the herd. If he does not improve i would suggest asking if you could have a swab done of his nose to find out what exactly is causing it and what drugs can be used to treat it.

Hope you get to the bottom of it. If i can be any help let me know.

x.
