Hi

I've just contracted winter vomiting and "d" bug.. can my guinea pigs get it?.. i haven't been near them and let me my partner do all the feeding, playing and stuff.
Thanks:(

There is not much information available about this subject.

Although it is unlikely guiena pigs can become infected, there is experimental evidence to show that human strains of norovirus can can infect other animals such as pigs and calves.

Human cold viruses tend to be more species-specific and probably can;t infect guinea pigs but in one experimental situation it has been shown that guinea pigs can catch human influenza.

I certainly would take extra precautions to protect my piggies if i had a virus infection including hand washing, wearing mask/gloves and handling the pigs (and their food/water bottles etc) as little as possible

Thank you very much Pebble.. the last thing i want is to make my little girls sick. They do think i'm ignoring them though, it will probably take a lot of treats to bring them round. Better to be safe than sorry, oh i miss them...

Thanks again.. Susan

Apparently guinea pigs can catch the "common cold" from humans but unsure about other viruses.
