I was just wondering if this could be what Freya has as she went to the vet a few weeks ago with a swollen toe. The vet said it was an infection of the nail bed and gave me some Septrin. This seems to have cleared the infection as there is no longer any swelling or heat, but the toe/foot still looks a bit...odd. There is a black ring round the root of the nail (I'll try and get a decent pic of it) and the underneath of the toe is kind of...crusty. I was just wondering if maybe it could be fungal as she has had ringworm on that foot previously.
Any ideas?

The toe itself is now thicker than the others (though it doesn't seem swollen as such anymore) and the underneath of the roots of all 3 toes is thickened.

Unsure on nail infections but didn't want to read and run. May be worth a visit to the vets just to check.

Yeah I haven't heard about fungal nail infections in gp's so thought I'd ask. I have some canesten left over from last time that is still in date so can use that if fungal is a possibility. A vet trip may be the way forward though. I just wanted to try and find out if there was such a thing lol

the toe looks a bit chunky and I am sure they can get nail bed infections from bacteria or the likes just like a hooman from a small injury so a vet visit might be good :-) they may not get fungal nail infections but bacteria are everywhere

They can get fungal nail infections yeah. Doris has one, although the vet has said that to treat it a biopsy would have to be done which would mean taking quite a large chunk. Doris is old and so she didn't want to put her through the stress, as it's not spreading to any other toes (it's just one) the vet said to just keep an eye on it. But every pig is different so I'd ask your vet :)

When I first saw the vet (about 3 weeks ago) they said it was a nail bed infection so I've treated for that and it's got better, but as you say, the toe is still chunky and black at the root so I was wondering if it was something more. I'll take her back to the vets and get them to look at it again.

Thanks for your comments :)
