a kidney removed? The reason I'm asking is, we have a boar with bladder and kidney stones, I've already emailed three guinea savvy vets who have all said it's difficult or not possible to remove stones from the kidney/urethra (Sp?)... my son takes Storm to the vets where I thought he was going to opt to have him put out of pain, but no, he's on stronger painkillers which is fine as long as his quality of life is ok and he doesn't spend all day/night sleeping and not eating or drinking... she also mention him having blood tests and maybe having his kidney removed which I have never heard of. My son has already said to me he wouldn't do that though, but I was curious as I've never heard of it before.

My impression is that it's possible (just like humans can live with one kidney) but that few vets are experienced with the operation so it's risky.

it's probably possible but be such a major op that it may not be in the piggy's best interests, with surgery and recovery etc x

Thanks @biscandmatt we wouldn't do it anyway and thought it was a bit daft her saying it and then claiming she could do it when the vet who is guinea savvy never said anything about it, neither did the other two savvy vets lol.. just this rude woman who I think was just trying to get Aidan to spend money he doesn't have (Aidan = my son).

Personally, I think it would be kinder to have him pts when it gets to the point that the painkillers aren't helping. He was giving vetergesic the other day but didn't have any painkiller for a couple of days as he seemed ok and normal, but today he's started squeaking when pooing again :( Was hoping his kidney stone had passed to his bladder, then we would have considered an op to get them removed.

My Bumble had a small kidney stone and I have a piggy specialist vet - she said yes it is possible to operate to remove the kidney, but in Bumbles case when she did the ultrasound there was gas over the other kindney so she couldnt get a clear view of it - she said if she removed the kidney with the stone in it there was no guarantee that that wasnt a stone in the other one - as it was only a small stone she suggested I syringe some sparkling water twice a day (two 1ml syringe fulls for a few weeks - in the hope that the gas in the the water would help push the stone through - my regular vet (who I see for lumps and general things laughed this off ) but a few weeks down the road after syringing the water and a long dose of septrin with some metacam , when he had to be ultrasounded / xrayed for something else the kidney stone had gone - my vet is Rachael Mowbray at Vale vets in Dursley - they are a referrals practice and always happy to answer questions from your vet.

I remember you posting that on another of my threads @TAN and I emailed her, she's been really helpful but never mentioned about having kidney's removed, but I did ask her about the fizzy water, she said you have to be careful of gas build up while giving it to them, she's been really nice and given us a lot of info in regards to painkillers and such :)

So thank you for telling me about her in the first place, I appreciate it :)
