Hi,

I have recently had a guinea pig (my first one ever!) and i thibnk he has previously been attacked by the other pigs he was with before he came to me.
I do think the scabs are healing now however they seem to be hurting him a lots as whener i touch him towards his bottom he squeels very loudly.
There are a hell of a lot of these scabs on him and i wondered if there was anything i could do to help him out a little bit untill they have all fallen off?!

Thanks for your help!

It sounds like it could be mites causing the scabs rather than bite wounds. Bite wounds are usually deep puncture type wounds, most commonly around the mouth and rear?

Mites are microscopic and can cause hair loss, scratching and scabbing - a pig will literally scratch himself to pieces with mites if it's a bad case, and squeal when touched. Can you take a pic? The good news is if it IS mites, it is easily treated and relief is very quick. Your vet will be able to check under the microscope for mites and treat accordingly.

Good luck

Sophie

Thanks, i'll see if i can get a picture of him where you can see the scabs and post it on here as soon as.
Is there any other signs for the mites other than the scabs as he doesn't seem to be scratching them or bothered any other time other than when i stroke him.

Here are some photos (if i managed to attach them correctly).
These are the worst of the scabs and from looking at the website photos you've kindly suggested the scabs do not look as bad as ones caused by mites at the moment and do look better today then they did 2 days ago.

Looking at your photos, it seems as though there is some hairloss around the scabs too. This looks as though it could mites as suggested, I am no expert and maybe someone else on here could back this up that has had experience of this.

Ouch, looks sore! Hard to say whether it's a bite or not but the hairloss suggests mites to me too... either way, I think a vet trip is on the cards!

i thought that, i'll get him in as soon as possible and let you know!
Thank you all for you help so far!!

i wouldnt say thats mites from looking at those pictures, they do look like bite wounds to me! hope vets goes well poor piggy!gemx

It was mites, so treatment has started so hopfully he will get back to his usual self very soon!
Thanks for all your help!

Good luck, if your piggy got the same treatement as mine recently got for mites (ivermectin drops) then you should notice relief pretty rapidly, within 2 weeks my gumble had regrown a fully bald and slightly scabbed leg to fully furred.
