Can I introduce a pair?

We are looking to get a boar to add to our 2 sows, we want to rehome one and I have found someone with a neutered boar and a sow who wants to give them away, with cage and all sorts. I would rather take them off her hands, before she takes them to a shelter.

Is it possible to introduce and boar and a sow together, to my two current sows?

i would think so! the sow would need to want to share her boarfriend though... try introducing them gradually, on neutral ground. could you keep them in seperate cages if they didn't get on?
 
That advice is very good and being able to keep them seperate or being prepared to have to rehome them if it doesn't work out if you can't keep them seperate is also something you need to consider. Good luck with what you deceide.
 
I would keep them in a seperate cage for a couple of weeks, and during that time, introduce them on neutral ground a few times and see how they get on.
We are also building a c&c cage soon, so i would time it so they all got introduced to the new cage at the same time.

Oh and I wanted to add that ideally we just wanted to add a boy, but were not having much look finding one that needs a home. I have to convince the other half that 4 piggys isnt that bad! :)

I think it is possible, but it's down to the girls I introduced my boar to two girls but they are all very laidback piggies and thankfully no one had to share there boyfriend :)).

It's true you do need to think what if they don't get along as long as your happy to have them separated if it doesn't work out, I don't see why you shouldn't give it a go. Please do not separate the girly and her boyfriend as they probably are very bonded.

I think you'll do well, that's exactly how we bonded ours, now they're best friends and get on soooo well!
 
I have done that in June when I introduced sisters Nerys and Nia to my bonded couple.

If you are unsure, I recommend to have them in cages next to each other for at least a few hours or a day, so they can get familiar with each other (change the position of both cages to make it more "neutral".

I did introductions on the landing upstairs first with a cage top in between the parties, which I removed when there was no sign of aggression.

It is VERY important that you do intros on neutral ground and make sure that you have several hours time.

The most likely clashes will be between the to two top ladies - it is all to go for in the hierarchy, so I would expect some major dominance behaviour between them. as long as it is not bloody scuffles, they will probably settle down together. also expect the boar goinga bit overboard with so many new girl to chase!

I have used a few different methods of introduction. I think the most successful was when I just put them all in the bath (empty!) and let them get on with it for the afternoon. :))
 
Thats great advice from Wiebke! and i can see sweet Dizzy in the picture too;)x)
I introduce my boys by bathing them and the introducing in a run with alot of hay and veg,not closed in pigloos are better so aim for tunnels so they can escape eachother if need be, goodluck xx
 
Thanks for all the advice, I just need to find a piggy to introduce now haha OH still isnt keen on getting another two, the idea of having 4 scares him haha Not many rescues in Ireland it seems, and the ones that are here dont get back to you very quick!
 
From what age can a boar be neutered? Because we have heard from a lady that has had an unexpected litter, and might have a boy for us, also would it be ok for him to stay on his own for a couple of months until he is old enought o be neutered? Or would that be cruel?
 
I do think so as well - a vet wants to make sure that a boar is a good weight because of the anaesthetic.
 
My vet has said as far as she's concerned it's a combination of things that determine the right time for neutering, condition (I took this to be weight and health) and how well developed he was and she did say she wouldn't consider it before 4mths old.
 
Right ok, looks like we probably couldnt have one of these babies then. I wouldnt feel right keeping it on its own for at least 4 months!

On a side note, I just found a lady here in Ireland who can sell me 25 cubes! yay! c&c cage is becoming a reality.
 
I have Roger on his own at the mo till he's firing blanks, he seems to be doing fine zooming around and popcorning like mad, it's not ideal but what can one do.

Yay for the cubes :(|)
