I am about to purchase an eight week old male to go with my six month old male. Are these ages suitable? Is eight weeks too old to introduce to six months?
I have a separate cage prepared, so I can introduce them slowly.
The only guinea pig I can find at present is from a pet shop. Is this alright? Are pet shop guinea pigs suitable? My first two were from a small pet shop but this one is a bit larger.
no this is fine - this is about the same age of mine when i introduced them
I wouldnt suggest having them apart and doing it gradually - i think the jumping around is confusing. I have always put them together straight away.
Best thing to do is make sure your cage is all neutral to both pigs and you hae two of everything so there is no fighting.
introduce them on neutral ground, like the living room floor - then just let them get to know eachother. Sometimes it may be tempting to separate them cos you feel like they going to start a fight! but its just them getting to know eacohter. If there is blood being drawn then take them apart" be careful though as when they fight they could bite you so use gloves! (keep some handy just in case when you introduce them)
That should be fine, there is a good enough gap to allow the older boar to take on the role of dad. By the time the younger boar is going through the hormone stage 'dad' will be out of it by then so they should live happily.
I've 4 boar pairings with only one being of similar age because Eccles is very submissive and just doesn't care. Same age pairings can work though just depends on the pigs involved. I would always go for a younger/older pairing were possible.
