Hi all, recently unfortunately my guinea pig Leo passed and Bean has been on his own for a while. He seems fine as we did have to separate them but they did like each other’s company. We are now planning on getting a cat in January and we have to move him to the garage (which is a big area with heating and a window & we will get him a bigger ‘cage’ to run around in). After thinking about him going to the garage, which we will visit every day, I thought he could get quite lonely as it’s not the room we go in as often. I was thinking about getting him another boar/male friend but we didn’t want to go through with what happened with him and Leo (they fought) do you think it’ll be better if we get a female guinea pig? We don’t want any babies so we will make sure to neuter both. Any thoughts? Is it a good idea? Would they fight as much? Thank you for your help. 😊

You are right in thinking that boar and sow bonds can be less complicated, but it all comes down to the personalities involved, and adding a female does not guarantee success.
The absolute best thing you could do for Bean would be to find a local rescue and take him boar dating.
This will allow him to choose his own companion (as opposed to an 'arranged marriage') and also make sure you end up with a healthy piggy who comes with lots of back up and support.

If you are able to tell us roughly where you are located then we can help suggest rescues in your area.

Hi!

Cross gender bonds are the most stable, but they rely on one party being neutered. Spayed sows are unfortunately extremely rare, so it would have to be Bean that has to be neutered and can then find a lady or two willing to take him on after a 6 weeks post-op safety wait.

Alternatively if you are based in the UK, then there is a number of rescues that offer boar dating at the rescue, so Bean comes home with a new friend only if acceptance has happened. Key to any happy piggy bond is mutual liking and character compatibility. Rescue dating will ensure that. You have also got the guarantee that you will only rehome a properly sexed, fully quarantined/healthy piggy from one of our recommended rescues.

Please make sure that there are no cars using a garage with a guinea pig cage, that the garage is insulated against the extremes of weather, the cage protected during cold and very hot weater and that any cage is fully safe against cats, rats and mice.

If the male is neutered or if the female is spayed. Neutering a male is the much less invasive and safer option and cheaper. Females are only spayed for health reasons . 👍.

I replied after only reading the thread title sorry if this doesnt make sense

thank you! the garage dosent have cars going through (as it like another room in the house) and has a locked door and no holes so no mice or rats will get through.
