Hi
I have 2 x boars who are around 4 months old. They have been super close and best friends up until a few days ago when they started teeth chattering at each other and showing other dominance behaviour. I noticed this straight away so kept a close eye on them. I did some research and noticed that their hutch was far too small for 2 boars (I didn’t realise this until then -major regret) so as a temporary measure, I extended their run area by a few feet. The next day (yesterday) they had a big tornado type fight where they were rolling around together. Luckily no one was hurt and no blood drawn but I have since separated them with one in the hutch and one in the run. A family friend is now in the process of making them a very large (over 7ft) hutch this will be ready in about a weeks time. Until then I will keep them separate. My question is, can I try and rebond them for their new living space or is that now it due to the fight? If possible, is it better to do it in a few months once their hormones surges have slowed? The new hutch has the option to separate but still allow them to see and speak to each other. I was hoping that I would see a big difference in them now they are separated but my non-dominant piggie seems desperate to get back in with his brother. Any help or advice greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum and I’m sorry to hear of the fight.

I’m sorry to say that after an actual rolling around fight rebonding is not going to be possible. Such fights occur due to character incompatibility which can come to light once the hormones hit.
If you were to attempt a reintroduction at any point, then further fights are highly likely.
While hormones play their part, a clash in character is permanent and sadly they will not change their minds about each other, not even when they are older. Hormones don’t fully settle until piggies are elderly, 5+ years old.

Each piggy needs a minimum of 4ftx2ft of space so the hutch needs to be a minimum Of 8ft and then split in half.

Thanks so much for this advice, absolutely gutted that their bond is broken but equally glad to know what route I need to take now. Thanks again.

It’s sad when it happens but they will be happier to live apart m.

I have had such a character clash and fight with one of my boar pairs. They came to me at 9 weeks old and just 9 weeks later they had a huge fight. They turn 2 years old next month and have lived as neighbours since the fight (although one of them has now been bonded with one of my other boars after he lost his cagemate)

So sorry that your boars have fallen out. I agree with everything @Piggies&buns has said above. I’m afraid that there is no realistic prospect of them being able to live together again but they will be fine living side by side as neighbours, each with their own space.

I had to separate my boys recently, I wasn't happy about it. My dominant boy is much happier now he's not being challenged. The other boy has settled with the situation now. Hubby and I are considering getting them both neutered and paired with a lady each as the cage is big enough for 2 pairs.
