Hey guys, it seems poor Callie just cant catch a break :(
This morning when I picked her up to give her her meds (on the 16th she'll have an ultrasound and urine sample done) she sounded all clogged up and like she was having issues breathing. I held her chest to my ear and sure enough her chest sounds all full. :( My question is, should I go to my vet and ask for some baytril or can her Meloxicam work? Can I even mix both of these meds? This is SO frustrating because I'm working with 2 different vets and i can only get to my specialist when my dad is willing to drive me. Unfortunatly this weekend dad is busy so I have to hope and pray my vet in town will be able to help. I just dont know if they'll even know what to do about this medication situation.
Please keep my baby in your thoughts and prayers. So far she seems to still be doing well but we all know how quick these guys go down hill.

*Callie is currently on 0.4ml of meloxicam once a day, 11ml(so a full syringe) of critcal care 2-3 times a day and 3 times a day i put Optixcare in her eyes.

Hi! URI is a bacterial infection and requires an antibiotic. meloxicam/metacam is an analgesic (painkiller cum anti-inflammatory). Antibiotics and analgesics can be given at the same time, but one cannot replace the other.
Diuretics (which drain any fluid build-up from the lungs or chest cavity) and also be given additionally to both the other groups of medication in order to free up the breathing as quickly as possible.

Please have her seen by a vet ASAP. Laboured breathing is a red flag symptom.
List Of Life And Death Out-of-hours Emergencies

Steam up your shower and place Callie on a dry towel inside for half an hour. make sure that you keep her dry when bringing her out again. This works as an improvised nebuliser.

Please step in with syringe feed and watering NOW. The need to breathe comes before the need to drink and only thirdly the need to eat. A guinea pig that is struggling to breathe will stop eating.
Weigh her daily at the same time (like before dinner), but don't dither over support feeding! You can use mushed-up pellets and a syringe with the tip cut off as shown in the guide.

I am very sorry; frail piggies with an already impacted immune system can develop secondary problems. :(

Sorry for such a late reply! It's been a busy last few days. I took her to the vet and the vet said everything was fine(which is SO strange) but we were given baytril for 10 days just to be sure. Thank you everyone for replying xx

I caught it on video! Does anyone have any idea whats going on? She stopped just as quickly as she started.

It sounds a bit congested. Have you tried to listen with your ear against the particular areas whether it is in the nose, the throat or the lungs?

I feel for you - piggies are past masters to hold their breath when they see a vet and behave like nothing is the matter until they are back home again... I have been there with piggies of mine a few times; VERY frustrating! :mal:

Off and on audible breathing can be caused by a URI, by pollen or dust stuck in the nose or throat, dry radiator or A/C air or perfumes/air fresheners or scent sticks. But it can also be due to narrowed airways especially in older piggies and/or lung disease from not fully healed out or damage caused by URIs earlier in her life.

The latter was the case with my Ffraid (who came here aged 4); it took me two years, several vet trip and a very experienced vet with a very good stethoscope to finally diagnose her. I knew from her previous owner that she had had URI when she was younger. Ffraid died aged 7 from age related problems in the wake of a heat wave and not from her issues, by the way. Nebulising helped her whenever she needed support with her breathing.

It sounded like it was coming from her chest the first time, and her nose this time. I'll be seeing her specialist this weekend so HOPEFULLY they'll be able to give me some advice.

Thank you for telling me the story of Ffraid. That gives me some peace of mind. I'm going to keep a close eye on her and continue with her critical care.

I just got home from the vet. Callie has a 2 and a half inch by 3 inch growing fiberus mass in her uterus. I wont put her through surgery at her age (5 and a half) so all I can do is keep her comfortable and pray to God its not cancer. And pray that its as slow as a snail. I was sent home with a probiotic and pain meds (just in case she start hurting.) This is the last thing any piggie mommy wants to hear :(
Thank you all for your help over this past month. I really appreciate it.

She sounds like she has nasal congestion... Hadley had that with a URI that cleared with antibiotics. It was only on and off. We had to get a video so the vet could listen, because of course she never made a noise at the vet's office!

I'm really sorry about the uterine mass... hoping it's benign and slow-moving. ((HUGS.))
