Can mites come from hay?

After my post a few days ago, I took Whiskey to the vet who treated her and the other two for mites in the first instance, and said to keep an eye on her bald patch over the next couple of weeks. It does seem a tiny bit bigger but I can already see a bit of hair regrowth which I am very happy about!

My question is the above - can mites come from hay? I get my hay from the stables where my horse is kept, and recently got a new batch. I am wondering if they mites could have come in from this, or if it was the stress of going to the vets for her nipple issue that brought them on?

No it is helpful, if there is even the slightest chance they could have come from the hay I'll get a new batch!

Mites can come from hay, but eggs can also lie dormant in the skin, only to make an appearance in stressful times or after an illness when the immune system is lowered.

Good to hear things are improving for Whiskey, I hope her hair grows back in very quickly. Are you going back in the next 7-14 days for the second dose?

Mites can come from the hay, it is believed that eggs may lay dormant on the skin as Wiebke mentioned, but they can also come from the bedding such as woodshavings.

Hello! Mites can come from the hay and from the bedding, I recently had mites and changed from the hay from the stables to readygrass, but i have just had another problem with mites so it might be the horse shavings I get.

I did use hay from the stables for a couple of years and had no problems, so I'm hoping that it is the beding.
