i have heard that piggies can catch our colds from us. does anyone know if this is true? i have a respiritory infection at the moment so as a precaution my partner is doing all the usual stuff like feeding them etc... any advice would be appreciated
I've heard the same thing - I've not had a piggy catch a cold from me, I have had pigs that got colds when no-one in the house had one. I think respiritory infection is a bit more serious - for both you and the pigs so I think it's good idea to have your OH to do the cleaning and feeding. Hope it doesn't last too long! Watch out for crusty noses or eyes or sad looking piggy.
Without knowing what virus/bacteria is causing your own cold, you don't know whether it can be passed on to your piggies...so if you can have someone else deal with the piggies for you then do, otherwise keep up basic hygiene e.g. hand washing, not breathing close to the piggies etc.
I've dealt with piggies when I've been well and when I have had a cold and only in one instance is there something of a link in my mind, but my "cold" was very bad and the pig had a very compromised immune system.
