Can Outdoor Gps Be Too Tame For Their Own Good?

My trio will be outdoor piggies when the warm weather finally comes. I enjoy having them indoors as I enjoy the closer contact but my OH is insistent they go outside in the summer. They will be in a hutch and will have a run pegged out for grazing in the daytime.

I am wondering if trying to get them tamer may be counter-productive when they are outdoors. Their run will be as safe as possible. Last year, parts of it were covered with netting but I may try to make a more substantial lid this year.

I can't control the through traffic of cats patrolling through our garden and I am also aware that there are some foxes in the area.

Will my piggies still keep their instinct and head for the safety of their hutch if something unknown comes close by?

Your guinea pigs will probably make a dash for safety if some animal is trying to break in, but they will probably learn to ignore any passing cats or even try to get to know them if they feel safe in their enclosure.

Thank you for the reply. I want to do everything I can to make sure they are safe and secure in the great outdoors!

Hi PiggieOwner.

Make sure the run is very firm so nothing can break in and harm your piggies.
I'd cover one side of the run with a bit of blanket or anything that will darken
half of it so that your guinea pigs will feel safe if they run on that half etc.

I'm hopeful that cats will have a glance, maybe a walk over but not do anything
to harm your guinea pigs once they here noise. As cats think guinea pigs
are like toys. But once a sound has occurred it's most likely that the cat
will just off anyway.

With foxes it's completely different. If there is foxes in the area I would deffiantly try to monitor
them the best you can, make sure the cage is very firm as I said so no fox can break in.

Make sure there's a hiding spot for your pigs, maybe a spare box or something that you
can make into a little house.

Hope I have helped you a bit, seeing as you've helped me on my posts. I'll help you no problem.

Source; I had the same problem with my 3 girls who passed now R.I.P princesses x

unless the run is very secure, i wouldn't risk leaving them out unsupervised. make sure you put proper bolts on the hutch and run aswell. :)

My three boars are stupidly attention seeking and will deliberately wheek at the dog/cat/rabbit to try to get to know them. I don't let mine out unsupervised in the garden we have now as there are too many foxes. In our old house I left them out during the day when I went out but I had very secure hutch/run combos weighted down with bricks and also I never saw a fox in our area. I never think those metal pegged out runs with mesh tops look very secure.

My 4 little boys are crazy for any attention given to them, even when out in the garden. They recognise my own cat and can quite often be seen nose to nose at the run wire with him, however like you we have a lot of passing cats and they will disappear into any of there hidey holes if they spot an unfamiliar moggy. As said above make sure your run is as safe and secure as possible and have plenty of bolt holes for your piggies to hide from any unwanted visitors
