i was just wondering if guinea pigs can swim because hamsters can and there sort of the same

I dont think so!
Someone posted a video off Youtube where some people made a piggy swim... it was able to, only because if he didnt swim he would have died! But I dont think they are supposed to! lol

Hmm I'm not sure...lol but I wouldnt go throwin your pig into a lake anytime soon O0

i saw the same video it was horrible, poor little thing.... they were laughing at him :tickedoff:

I do believe they can swim as i'm sure somebody spoke about it awhile ago, but i don't think they could go too far, i wouldn't try it

I saw that you tube vid too it was cruel >:(

Luckily all the comments at the bottom reflected that! ;D

My piggies hate the little bit of water used when bathing so i doubt theyd like swimming!

Cat x 0:)

yes they can swim but i think it's one of those life or death things like if they don't swim they'll die i don't think it's something there meant to do

:tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: GRRR! I DON'T LIKE THE SOUND OF THAT YOUTUBE VIDEO! :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff:

I saw something on another forum once where someone said her piggy loved swimming and being in the water.
She let him swim in the bath

They can swim and in the wild would (not for long periods of time, only to get across a stream or something like that), however, domestic guineas ability is not as good as that of the wild cavies and therefore should not be allowed to swim. They have not be bred with this ability in mind and for many, many years have not been given the opportunity to use this skill. And I wouldn't suggest putting a Peruvian in a bath. ;)

i wouldnt even go there putting it in the bath to swim only when they have a bath

My piggies HATE water so I wouldn't put it high enough to find out - but I know some piggies love water.

Just wanna say whilst you mention it, for the record, hamsters should never get wet, unless it is absolutely necessary. :(

my pigs all hate water... I only bathe them when really necesarry :)

Why shouldnt hamsters get wet?

Bathing hamsters can result in them becoming ill, catching a chill and possibly dying. It also strips necessary oils from their fur and skin. The only time they should ever have a bath is if they have something toxic/something which would harm them on their fur which needs to be removed, and even then they need to be dried VERY well.

ive been told tht hamsters and guinea pigs can both swim :-\

It really depends on the guinea pig - some are terrified of wwater and wouldn't even attempt to swim. Pepper once paddled whilst having a bath - but not sure whether he was trying to climb out or swim. I also wouldn't put the water high enough for them to do so. Like I said before, maybe hamsters can swim, but they should never get wet.

Both species can swim but neither of them should be allowed ,especially hamsters that's a big no no like Jane said. :)

I saw them swimming in Peru. But I also saw them being eaten with chips in Peru... I wouldn't encourage either activity. Judging by the way mine react to a few splashes of water in the sink during bathtime, I would say they are not natural waterbabies.

Were they wild guineas in Peru? :)
Yep! They were much smaller than our pet ones though. Still cutie pies. But I also accidentally stumbled across a guinea pig farm which made me quite sad. :'(

Guinea pig farm. :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: Wild guineas can swim much better then domesticated guineas as they have had the opportunity to develop this skill. O0

I would not watch that video you were discussing at the strat of this thread.

There are couple of videos. One of the titles 'guinea pigs can swim', are you telling me you put an animal in water to see IF it can swim. :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: And one of the videos the guinea is in the bathtub, one of the people say and I quote "he doesn't seem to like it much" so why did you leave him in there for at least another 10 seconds. :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: Some people are, I would say thick or are idiots but I don't think there are any words to describe their stupidity or cruelty. :tickedoff:

There are words I have used before on this forum but I get edited by the mods.

Just watched another one, worst one I have seen. There are quite a few videos on there, how can the people not see the guineas are terrified and that's putting it lightly. :'( :tickedoff:

Of course they know they are upset. They do it for the fun.

Don't watch these. I won't. I'm not prepared to do that to myself.

we should all put a notice of disgust or something into you tube and get them removed, cruelty to animals or something... any suggestions?
