My skinny pig Freddy has started scratching his right side between his ear and abdomen.
Not all the time but it has caused redness and scratches
I applied F10 ointment and they went away but are now back.
I’ve seen him do this so I know it’s not aggressive behaviour from my other pig.
I have a camera so I can observe them anytime
Ive carefully trimmed his nails as they have always been very sharp pointy nails.
I’d be grateful for any advice
Geoff isn’t scratching at all

Hello Roselina..Sorry, I can't answer that question but did want to say your boys are adorable.

Not a silly question. Yes they can get mites. Mites burrow into the skin so not having hair doesn’t stop them from getting mites.
It also might not be mites and he is instead having a different kind of issue/skin issue so It would be best to keep him checked by the vet

They can definitely get mites as we have had to treat our skinnies in the past. He could also be scratching due to pain, so I would get him to the vet for a checkup.

So the Vet thinks they have mites - she couldn’t see any but the evidence of Freddy scratching and for Geoff makes it very likely.

Unfortunately Beaphar invermectin is nowhere to be found, the Vets can’t get, PAH can’t either
I found this on Amazon which has the same invermectin per ml

Amazon.co.uk
Just wondering if anyone else has used it ?
Also 2 pipettes for over 750g the same as Beaphar brand

Vet agreed it was ok to use

I assume they still can’t get xeno (which is better and stronger than beaphar and naqua) - I have seen naqua mentioned before on the forum though (as being used since the xeno shortage)

No they can’t get xeno either but until recently had been able to get Beaphar very odd as there doesn’t seem to be a reason why it’s not available - Beaphar and Naqua are produced in the Uk so it can’t be pricing / tariffs not sure about xeno

Here’s Patrick’s thread. I’ve been through this twice this year.

Mange Mites

He’s had Beaphar (I wasn’t really happy with the lower dose) and kitten Stronghold.

Actually thinking about it, him getting them again this year makes me think the Beaphar was no good.

So far the kitten Stronghold seems to have done the trick 👍🏻

I’ll try the Naqua but keep in mind if it doesn’t work to try the stronghold kitten
My vet didn’t mention it just that xeno was unavailable for ages and the next best was Beaphar
🤞 it’ll work
The piggies have never had this before - Geoff is nearly 6 and Freddy is 3 ( been with me 1 year) and they haven’t been anywhere - I'm hoping it’s mites from the hay and will be easily sorted.
The Vet did check for ringworm too - no evidence of that.

The Vet phoned me at 19.00 to see if I’d got hold of any invermectin - she said about stronghold kitten if it doesn’t seem to work
I thought how lovely to phone after the surgery finished.

So I realise I have to dispose of all the hay I have and I’m now wondering as I don’t know which hay has the mites ( even if it is hay mites!) can I risk ordering from the same company ?
I did get some hay from PAH and Amazon as well but the bulk came from a company I’ve used for many years with no issues
I have the Naqua now and am hoping it will work despite it not being as strong as Xeno 450.
I’ve washed all the fleece/ hides bedding ( with a lot of chatter telling me off😂)
Disinfected the c&c etc
I’ve carefully checked the boys prior to the application and there were no lice visible and no brown specks and I used a magnifying glass 😬

Any advice would be very welcome

Hello Roselina..How is Freddy and Geoff coming along with their treatment?

Hello DavRz they seem ok , not happy having the liquid on the back of their necks! I thought Freddy had stopped scratching and it was all healing but he was scratching yesterday. I suppose it takes a while to start working.
Thank you for asking DavRz

There was so much cleaning to do ….not just their c&c but the carpet underneath, the storage boxes, their travel carrier etc.
I threw a lot of stuff out , the hay obviously, log tunnel, wicker chew ball , seagrass mats … I think I’ll wait for two weeks before I put anything like that back.
I’m storing their new hay in the house in plastic containers until I can deep clean the shed 😬😤
I even dreamt of lice a few nights ago !
