One of our sows who is nearly 3 years old has been doing the well know sniffly gaspy sound typical of a URI, but only some of the time.

She doesn't seem to be doing open mouth breathing, her nose and ears are clear, no discharge from everywhere. Normal eating, drinking, pooping.

We took her to two vets who both said it could be behavioural as there is no sign of anything actually wrong.

Her cage mate passed away about 2 months ago, we've just adopted a lovely new sow but they're still in separate cages being gradually introduced. The gaspy sound began before she arrived.

Has anyone had any experience of this being behavioural? She only does it sometimes and can stop immediately with no obvious link!

Many thanks all

Beth xx

I am not 100% sure what sound you mean, do you have a video at all? is it a hoot?

Welcome to the forum.

if its any use to you ,l have a sow that has had breathing problems most of her life, there is no uri symptoms just a hoot when she breathes (not as bad now)

I'll try and sort a video thank you :)

It almost sounds like a wheezy squeak, almost like she has phlegm! She's been scratching more too but no sign of mites or loss of hair.

Thank you :)
