Hi,

I posted a few days ago regarding my guinea pig Spice who underwent Bladder Stone surgery, she was a little fighter and managed to come round, eat and drink (and squeak for fruit & veg) as normal after 2 days of her surgery. Today she has had Timothy Hay, pellets, Dandelion/herb mix, a piece of carrot and a piece of cucumber- just this now I have noticed when she was taking her nap a gurgling noise in her stomach, she seems well in herself and is eating, chatting, drinking and passing urine/poo as normal but now and then I hear a weird gurgling noise from her- why could this be? Has anyone else experienced this? Because she has to be housed indoors for the week due to her surgery (she lives outdoors) and can only see her sister for a few hours (she is not allowed to stay with her sister for the whole time in case the sister tries to nibble Spices wounds), Spice has now developed a habit to chew the wood and the cage bars due to her being bored and having no one to play with- could this be the cause of her gurgling? Maybe she is sucking in wind?
Thanks for reading :)

I'm sorry to hear your little poppet is ill. I hope she recovers soon. x
Has she got a swollen tummy, that could be gas?

I have felt her tummy and no tightness and isnt swollen :)

Check for signs of bloat/gassing and if in doubt, take her off any fresh food until her guts have stabilised again. Very occasionally, tummies can be very rumbly.

if you can provide her with a piece of cardboard that would be good; piggies after an op or with a tummy upset often crave very rough, poor fibre. A hay stuffed toilet roll or a hay stuffed cardboard box will do to keep her entertained!

PS: I have added a more specific title to help our specialists. We do our best to answer all threads in this section as promptly as possible. You can help us by stating your problem in the title.

Can she move about much or is she restricted because of the op? A pig with gas can really benefit from moving around or having the abdomen massaged with anything that vibrates, or being placed on a massage pad. I would be a bit worried about doing this so close to her op though. Does she seem uncomfortable? You could give her Woodwards Gripe water which helps break down the gas bubbles. I dose at 3ml every few hours.

it does sound like gas possibly. is she on meds? maybe a probiotic would help?
