what part of the country are you in . someone may be able to advise you of someone who could give a second opinion.

Hi, sorry to hear you're having trouble with Ernie (SarahP from RU here).

I'd thoroughly recommend the Daktarin oral gel, as one of my girls gets a sore mouth from time to time (although her teeth are fine), and the Daktarin is great stuff. Only trouble is, it's over the counter, and I got such a grilling from a pharmacist the other day, so have your story about your fictitious child ready! :))

That's interesting, which text book says that?

Regular readers will know that a general anaesthetic is never necessary but most newcomers will not be aware of this fact.
The vet profession will never change unless pig owners persist in asking for non-anaesthetic treatment.

I wonder why more forum members do not learn about the subject?

I'm lucky enough to live within driving distance of CCT, and have been meaning to do the dentistry course, it's one of my new year's resolutions! With so many pigs at mine at any one time, it seems prudent.
However, many people will continue to take their vets advice, and opt for GA. It's sad that this advice hasn't really changed over the last decade or so.

OMG Sarah, hiya, you're so right I went to boots to get daktarin, only I stupidly told them what it was for :red and they wouldn't sell it me, I had to run to boots too to get there and to the Asda in my lunch hour DOH, it's the oral one I need right, I'm guessing that is a silly question :))

Got the strawberries, cress and a few other bits.

I am already registered with three vet practices so if needs be I can go to another. However I don't really see that any of them can help more at the minute. He's had his dental, I've got all the bits and bobs to help him eat, he's on pain relief, the vitamins and he's got his abx that I have to pick up tonight, I don't see what another vet can do that hasn't been done already. :(

That's the trouble, though - finding a vet that knows enough. I've forgotten if you've mentioned where you are, but if you let us know the area someone may be able to advise if there is a rodentologist near you. They will be able to take a good look at your pig just to check nothing has been missed...

Cambridge Cavy Trust - the lady's name is Vedra - will also be able to recommend guinea-savvy vets in your area. It really is worth considering.

Hope he's ok

Thank you, I am registered with a vet that specialises in small animals, well I am registered with three vets, it depends on what the problem is to which vet I visit.

Have you given him Metatone, 0.5ml daily for 3 or 4 days, as an appetite stimulant?

Yep, he's on that, although I only started that last night, but will carry on giving that to him.

He's eat a bit of cress :(|), going to go and feed the bunnies and then make him up a syringe feed.

AP, I thought it would be common sense, years ago I had problems with a pig who had dental work under GA. I now know better and will not let a pig have a GA unless I am sure it is absolutely necessay.

Thank you, just been watching him and he looks so sorry for himself :(, cut up sme more veggies going to take them up.

It is very emotional dealing with a poorly piggie. As long as he's showing some interest in food and in moving, there is definitely hope.

Big *hugs*. xx

Thank you, yes he seems interested, he had a bit of a play with the cress earlier, he is deffo poo'ing (I know bunnies rather than piggies, so not sure if that is as important as what it is in a bun), he is getting about, just not much. I am going to start thinking positive, I have spoke to my lodger and he is going to do morning feeds, then I can do the next one when I come home from work, then another before bed, is that enough?

How much are you able to get into him at each feed? As long as he's maintaining his weight (weigh daily) then he's getting enough.

Pooping is good in piggies, means they're getting enough food going through them to keep the digestive system going. :)

I'm sorry your pig is unwell, have you specified your location,a few members particuarly AP are great with teeth issues anbd may be able to help,
I hope he gets better xx

Any progress Soad? I hope your little guy had a comfortable night.

On the fresh food front, I found that cutting veggies into thin "julienne" strips made it easier for my dental piggy to pick bits up when his mouth was sore so in addition to syringe feeding I used to leave him some tasty fresh food in his cage.

Fingers crossed you shortly see some improvement.

HIya,

Thank you, thank you, thank you xoxo

Right this morning is a bit better, I'm in wolves but like i've already said I am sorted for vets, I have rang the other vet I use (it's one for more complicated stuff) and they do conscious dentals, so that is sorted, I'm not being deliberately awkward I am registered with three vets, because I run a rabbit rescue. I used the vet that I use for the rabbit dentals and neuters originally, I had not known about non-ga thing until after I'd had it done, the vet I used have done hundreds of neuters/dentals on buns for me, so it wasn't a case of using any old vet. If you know anything about buns you'll know that it's not the done thing to do without GA, so I assumed it was the same thing. I don't rescue piggies, so it's a case of never really learning much, as Bert and Ernie have not caused me too much trouble. Ernie has had a couple of ops in the past, he had breast lumps and even with a FNA could not determine what it was as it just kept bringing out blood and he was bleeding from his nipples so they had to go, but this was a few years ago.

Last night was awful, he was trying to pick up the little bits of veggies I had cut up, but he couldn't physically chew them, it was so painful to watch. This morning when I got up he was actually at his food dish (again the same problem), but it's not so bad this time, as last night, I was so upset as I thought it was a case of his mouth being damaged, but this morning...

1, is the first time he has actually come out his box (I was putting bits of food in there for him) so at least he is perkier

2, I did him some critical care and he was sucking it off the syringe, then he was chewing from side to side (not much but he was)

So I am of the opinion that there can't be paralysis from the op, because he can pick food up (even though he wasn't chewing) and I have actually seen his mouth moving side to side (when syringing), so I would think that it is all functioning?

I am going to pop out and get some supplies and critical care, anyone know where I can get it? No time to order any off the net, I was going to try P&H, I wouldn't normally give them my money because they sell animals, but needs must and all that jazz.

I will weigh him (I have proper animal scales) anyone know how many packets of CC he should have a day, I am assuming one, most is ending up on me.

The most major breakthrough I've had is, after he had chewed the CC and swallowed t, he was putting his mouth over the syringe so I can squirt it in, so he is trying now.

I am pleased I have seen his mouth moving in all directions, albeit not a lot, but all directions seem to be working, that has got to be positive right?

So his teeth are either cut wrong (but they will grow and I can have second dental done at other vets), or he has a sore mouth

Does this all sound probable?

Does this sound postive, please tell me this sound positive, I have been so upset over it all :( I have actually got a stress headache

Also, how often do I need to be syringe feeding? I have the thing where I am out at work 12 hours a day and I leave for the gym at 5 in the morning (I am training for the London marathon for the local hospice and a lot of people are depending on the money I am raising so I can't let them down and have to go), I don't get home until after 7 at night. Do I need to be thinking about taking him with me, will this be too stressful? I would have to take him in a cardboard box as I am not allowed to take animals into work, so I would need to do it in secret and where will I put him when I am at the gym, oh gawd.

I do homechecks for the RSPCA and because of the snow these have built up so have a load to do today, when things like this happen I realise how little time I give myself for sorting out disasters, my head is banging. I am up at four tomorrow to go running, then can give him a syringe feed before my volunteer gets here to help clean the buns, then can do another, before I get on with other stuff, but the week days are worrying me.

Must get lots of coffee as I can see me having little sleep, I am lucky to get five hours a night as it is.

Hi Tree,

Sorry to hear about your piggie, I have only had one piggie unable to eat after a dental, they had hurt his jaw during the procedure and he was unable to pick up food. I used to have to syringe feed him all of his food, I know it would be impossible for you to do but I was feeding him every 2 hours during the day and every 4 hours at night.

Dec was fed mainly on CC and baby food along with cucumber that I peeled and then liquidised.
