Just a quickie... someone has told me (not on the forum- elsewhere) that if I get another piggy to go with Piggle they should be of the same age (6 weeks) otherwise they will fight...
How true is this? ?
I am not sure how limited a search I have to make it to find her a chum! :o
Judging by what I have heard then the same age is ideal. I got the boys when they were 10 weeks old but introduced Twinkle to Sunshine when Sunshine was 12 weeks and the boys to Cuzzy two weeks later...follow...I don't! :-D
I think around the same age is best but before they become teens, this is what I've done and it has worked out up to now.
Sorry to hijack your thread here, but what if the pig is 1yr old? Would there be an "age limit" for this pig? Some people have said getting a baby pig introduced to the older pig would be a better idea.
I have been making some phone calls etc. However I might wait till I actually have Piggle here with me so that if I can, maybe I can take her with me to choose.
I got my boar neutered at 4 months old and within a couple of weeks he was living with a sow who was approx 18 months old. I won't lie and say that they are the best of friends but they haven't fought each other and live ok together.
I also have just got a 6 week old sow to add to my brood too. As long as you introduce them slowly I don't see that it matters. I think the only parings where it can help bonding is with 2 boars.
I may be wrong but they are loads of people on here with plenty of experience who will be able to help. Taking your new sow to choose her mate is a really good idea too. We did that with our rabbits and it's worked brilliantly.
I agree with miss piggy. With sows, it doesnt really matter about ages and taking Piggle along to a rescue to choose her cage mate is the best idea. An older sow will likely become the dominant of the two, but one has to be so thats fine.
With boars, they say a baby is a better match as the older boar is more likely to accept him, but as I know, when baby reaches puberty, things can quickly change
I think it is more down to the personality of the piggie as older placid boars can accept eachother
