Canesten Caused Red Ear

Hello everyone, please could u help me... I found on my new piggie white crusty things on ear and bold patch on one side of back. Went to vet this tuesday and we agreed that it is ringworm. They didnt have oral treatment available in surgery so they ordered for me but she said i can use canesten for woman trush. So i was putting it on affected areas twice a day but i realized today that his ear is very red now and I'm worried i did some harm to him with that canesten cream. Did u experience redness after applying canesten? Not sure what to do if to discontinue cream and wait for oral treatment?
 
I agree with stopping the Canesten and waiting for Itrafungol. The Canesten needs to be the 1% version which I think is the nappy rash one. It does not tend to be effective on Ringworm anyway so you are best waiting for the Itrafungol. Imaverol is also mentioned in the guide and that is also effective.

The canesten thush cream is stronger. Canesten for fungal nappy rash is only 1℅
 
So i search so much about ringworms in guinea pigs, as one of my piggies got it. Please could anyone who had same experience could give me advice how to clean cage and whith what as everywhere is saying that i need special products to use when there is a ringworms problems. But i checked online and it all cost a lot and i have one of the C&C cages which are huge. I generaly every day change towels which i use as bedding and newspapers which are underneath. Also i spray all dishes and removable parts with 'Clean n' Safe' spray from Johnsons which i got from pet shop. Do i actually need also to spray the whole base of the cage every day? tomorrow I'm getting oral medicine for him from my vet whom we seen this week and he ordered it for us. I'm getting just too stressed and worry with this cos I'm not sure if I'm doing enough to kill this fungal virus. Any advice please what type of cleaning products u use and where can i get it, thanks a lot.

You really need to invest in a proper antifungal disinfectant as the normal shop products are only antibacterial, but not antifungal and will not stop the spread. At the worst, you can soak the whole cage (including the top) and everything in bleach for 15 minutes, but even that is not totally effective. You do not need to disinfect the cage every day. Twice weekly is enough, but make sure that you do a total clean of everything at the beginning and then again at the end, so no spores survive. It pays to invest in a good product, though, as that prevents a return of the ringworm, whose spores can survive up to 18 months.

PS: I have had to deal with ringworm myself more than once and have learned the hard way not underestimate it or to scrimp on it.
 
Hello Wiebke, thanks for advice, i just got from ebay F10 Super concentrate Disinfectant, which i hope will arrive soon so i can get start with cleaning and desinfecting the cage and everything inside. As this is concentrate i wanna get in shop some empty bottle spray which i can use for diluting the concentrate with water. Thanks again for help.
 
Hi everyone, so my piggie has ringworm, went to vet, ive got for him antifungal oral medication which he was taking 14 day, now after treatment his before bald patch is overgrown with new hair but his ears are still crusty white. I read somewhere that nizoral( human shampoo) is good for bathing them while they have ringworm, is that true and if so how often to bath them? Also i read that hay may have fungal spores so what hay to buy? I'm cleaning the cage regulary with the F10 desinfectant, but ive already got it myself:-(
 
If your piggy has had a systemic oral antifungal treatment, then the likelihood is that the ear problem is not fungal at all; it should have been cleared as well. throwing fungal shampoo at it won't help under the circumstances.

You and your vet may need at other causes like dry skin?
