I was just browsing a dog forum that I am a member of but don't post much and there is a thread on guinea pigs. I was just reading through it and somebody said they had a relative with guinea pigs but he became allergic to them but found out it was the hay he was allergic to so they cut the hay out of the diet altogether and swapped it for straw instead.grrrr Somebody questioned it and they simply said that it was the difference between keeping the guinea pigs or getting rid.:( How can people be so cruel to cut out something from an animals diet that they need to live on?grrrr

oh. my. god. I'd put up with the allergy, it's cruel to completely cut it out and straw is harmful!

I am actually allergic to hay and sneeze my head off and actually itch inside but it would never stop me giving my animals something that they need to live. I just make sure I take a piriton tablet if I'm cleaning them out and shaking out the hay and then it's not so bad. :))

I read that site! I was really shocked when I saw that and was very impressed with the reply from Jean - she's a long standing member of the forum and is very respected so hopefully what she's said will get through.

I've just posted on there because I think it's really cruel and selfish what they are doing.:( I've just put this..

Well personally I think they would be better rehoming the guinea pigs because it is cruel to cut something from their diets that they badly need. I also have an hay allergy and keep guinea pigs. I take piriton tablets if I know I'm going to be cleaning them out and therefore having a lot of contact with the hay.

A lot of people have an allergy to hay...hayfever?!?! Including me! You can get very good anti-histamines over the counter, and stronger ones from your GP!

I don't get normal hayfever - the type where pollen affects me in summer - it just seems to be the actual hay or dust that starts me off but piriton is great as long as I remember to take it about 15 mins before I start cleaning them out.

You can get hay cubes which are solid as well. But yep I have hayfever and use an antihystimine when needed. Pigs should be rehomed if they aren't getting hay. Its 80% of the diet!

That's awful :(:( Toby would kill me in my sleep if I cut out his hay, if he's allergic he should probably just give the piggy away

The person in question has replied and said 'Why re-home when they are healthy on straw - there are enough un-wanted pets in the world without re-homing wanted pets !

I give up!rolleyes

Mmm...yes that it very bad! grrrr I think that they should've given the guinea pig a new home, somewhere where no one is allegic to hay and who can give the guinea pig the suitable material it needs. Some people are just stupid! I feel when you have animals your supposed to put the animals first like you do with kids

me and my oh were allergic to our piggies at first, now our systems are used to them. so why not let your system get used to it? i bet this owner couldn't go without carbohydrates for his whole life?!!

That's very selfish of them!
If their allergies are really so bad that they can't handle it, then the responsible thing to do is to find them a better home.

I have severe asthma, hayfever, and eczema.....ALL of which are irritated by hay.....but there is no WAY that I would even CONSIDER cutting it out....I have a total commitment to my animals well-being and care, and in MY humble opinion, what she is doing by cutting their hay out is neglect. mallethead

A lady called Jean has explained it to them but they don't seem to care. grrrrIt's not their guinea pig but a relatives but she thinks it is okay.:(
