Hi there! I'm new to this board - did a search on Google and found it and thought I'd ask for some help/advice/suggestions.

I'm currently living in Neuchatel, Switzerland and am a homemaker. The last time I had a cavy was about four years ago; I had to give her away because I was leaving the country. :(

This time, I'd like to get a cavy for companionship and because I love animals. I know I can provide a good home, lots of care and love for these furry adorable creatures.

The thing that's making me think twice is this - hubby and I go away to France at least three to four times a year. Sometimes it's for a week at most BUT our biggest travel would be three weeks to M'sia in Feb where I'm from. I worry about providing for my cavy (should I get one) while I'm away.

I could ask someone to drop on by, but I don't know anyone and the nearest friend I have lives in Lucerne (three hours by train and I don't want to put the cavy through all that stress).

I could board it but I don't know where to go in Neuchatel.

I could let it be for three weeks but that's like asking me to go without fresh clothes, fresh veg and companionship for three weeks.

So, I don't know if I should get a cavy or not...

Help?

I think if you have animals you do need someone to look after them for you whilst you have holidays - you can never leave them on their own because they do need fresh food and water everyday.:) Sometimes pet shops will board small animals, don't know if they do this in Switzerland or not.?/

I'd say DON'T have one until you've sorted out who would look after your pets when you're away.

Me and my other half discussed these issues before we got our 4 little girls, and we decided my dad would look after them whilst we were away (he loves animals and would love to have some, but my mum is dead against, and he doesn't mind looking after them at all!). We also have talked and decided what would happen if we ever split up, who would have custody of each pig. I know this sounds a simple issue, but it's not and it's so very, very important as it would be so difficult when you had split. Not that we ever intend to split up, but you never know. We have decided that I will have custody of all 4 piggies as I do not work away a lot like my other half, meaning they have a more perminant home. Andy would obviously be able to come and see them, but he'd have to call first and make sure I'm home. I would also email him regularly, at least weekly, to let him know how they are. But hopefully we'll never be in that situation! x

I agree with the others. Check if any pet shops or rescues/shelters in your arrea board pets. Also, there might be private pet sitters in your arrea as well. Only I would check those first. And last but not least, neighbours might be willing to help too. Just ask ;) Hope you'll find someone :)

P.S.: My OH and I also have an agreement regarding who would take which pet if we slit up. He would get the black cat (as they both just love each other) and I would get the tabby cat and the pigs :D

i'm so glad we're not the only ones to think about this! it would absolutely break my heart to have squables over pet custody, i couldn't give up any of my piggies. i feel all sentimental now, i'm welling up over the thought of it.x

Well, between me and hubby, it's already known who will get the pet - he likes animals but the last time he had a pet was when he was a kid and it kept dying on him! He has a black thumb as well, so if it's anything living, I'm the one doing the major caring... :)

Anyway, I got some ideas from another forum - vets and what-not - plus there is a rabbit/guinea pig shelter in a town opposite the lake (I live next to a lake), so I'll discuss this with hubby and see how it goes. We need to consider the cost and all, since we'll be getting a pair (it's a Swiss law).

Am I the only nutcase who doesn't just go out and buy a pet on a whim?

wow, its a law that you have to buy/have 2 guinea pigs together?

Yes, apparently it will come into effect on 1 September 2008. There are mandatory cage sizes as well. Oh, and it's not just for cavies. There are rulings for dogs, cats...even fish! :)

Anyway, after discussing it with the hubby, we've decided to NOT get the cavies, mainly because of the vacation issue plus space constraint with a pair.
