Can't Do This Again

I have had several bladder piggies and one had two bladder stone ops in quick succession but her prognosis was very poor. my heart goes out to you, its something I absolutely dread more than any other guinea ailment.

This little girl also then had a bad heart so coincidently ended up on Frusol to manage the fluid in her lungs. Bizarrely the Frusol, being a diuretic, made her thirsty so she drank a lot more, I did also give her additional water (10ml) twice a day every day until her last day.

As a result her bladder was flushed properly daily and she stayed with me for another 3 years. The main concern was the pressure on her kidneys from he Frusol but when she finally had to be PTS at the grand old age of 7, it was a tumour in her tummy which was her undoing and her kidneys were fine.

I mused with the vet that perhaps the Frusol helped to keep her drinking and she said it was an interesting side effect which actually helped the bladder issue. Just thought it maybe something to think about?

That's ineterseting about the Frusol, thank you, I will mention it to Rosie. I'm going to ask the vet who is going to call me later whether we should delay Daisys steroid shot until I actually see Rosie.

Yes, the metacam can interact with the steroid. Is Rosie in today to speak to?

No unfortunately so I'm waiting for Catherine to call me but she's not as guinea savy as Rosie.
Do you have any idea why Daisy isn't eating hay or pellets? Could it be because she's in pain?

They often don't eat when in pain, I would say pain relief is the be all and end all and most important.

I hope catherine rings me soon because if we do decide to put off the steroid injection I can give her some metacam but if she rings me late and we still go ahead with the steroid jab tomorrow I won't have any alternative painkiller for her tonight.

Yes it was an interesting 'benefit'! She also had Metacam with the Frusol, she was a walking pharmacy! It's probably not the 'done thing' but the logic worked and it definitely worked in practice.

If it's dog metacam and your pig weighs around 1000gm my vet doses at 0.3ml going up to a max of 0.5 ml - this is once a day or you can split the dose in half and give it twice a day - I always have someone on metacam - currently 2 of mine are on it for arthritis.

What about Tramodol @sport_billy ? Can that be given instead of Metacam? @Amysmom what does she weigh? I only have been prescribed the Dog one, my piggy getting palliative care weighs about 920g & is on the dog one, 0.3ml twice a day which she tolerates well, but I have had piggies on much higher doses than that.

It's a cat metacam and she weighs 680 grams which has now pushed me to get that steroid jab tomorrow. I did postpone until Tues when Rosie is there which is why I asked about the metacam dose but she can't have it now.
She's very bright and such a wriggler! Syringing her really is horrendous so I have to go down the steroid route to get her to eat and drink. When you put the syringe to her mouth she behaves as though you are stabbing her! Her poops are becoming very soft but they are still formed.

She is tiny... :(

Please speak to vet tomorrow about pain relief she can have alongside the steroid. Let us know how she gets on Vetergesic is what we have had with steroid in past and it was one drop from a pre filled syringe in side of mouth EDIT when I say a drop I mean literally 0.01ml so a tiny amount and that was for a 800g pig. So you really need in depth discussions with vet regarding and pain relief as she is a very low weight.

She's always been a small pig-no heavier than 900 but she's lost weight and she's lost since yesterday

I will certainly ask for a painkiller tomorrow and I will mention Vetergesic.
Thank you for the advice.

Thinking of your little one today. As syringe feed maybe try mushed up pellets instead of critical care food?

If the vet decides on pain relief to be opiate based as metacam can't be used - e.g. Anything like vetergesic or tramadol then please make sure you get some gut stimulant like emeprid as opiates can slow the gut down and harden poo's which you definitely do not want happening with her eating less. If it were me I would be booking an apt to see Rosie on Tuesday to check up on her.

Be aware any opiate can space piggies out though and some piggies react badly to them. So make sure you discuss everything throughly with the vet.

Sending vibes and love to little Daisy. X

We had a discussion with the vet before Daisy was given her steroid injection and we were shown her X-ray which made me sure we have to try the steroid. She has a medium sized stone with what looks like sludge beside it so the hope is that with extra drinking from the steroid the stone may dissolve a little so that she can pass it-although i do feel that this is a long shot. We have some Vetergesic and emprid set up in syringes if we feel she needs the pain relief. I get worried about putting these different things in her body so I will only use it only if necessary.

How long should it take for the steroid to take effect? The vet said it's fast acting and although Daisy really enjoyed her veggies yesterday she's still not munching her hay.
I did give her a dose of Vetergesic last night because she was hunched and clearly in pain. She did run down her cage and clucked a little which is something she always did until she got poorly.

Well Daisy has lost more weight, she is now 618g and I'm fearing the worst. So far the steroid has not increased her appitite and syring feeding is getting impossible. All she wants to eat is veg and I can feel the bones in her back. I feel very frustrated
