My dad is funny. When he has one of my pigies out for a cuddle he says to them "You are fluffy and cute but what is the general purpose of you? They're just no use to man or beast really. They are just a ball of fur and nothing else really." :)) but he says it in a soft caring voice to her and i'm like "aww don't be mean!" :)):))
I mean he's right really. We have these piggies but what do they do. It's not like they can help with washing and hoovering LOL
Or ok....MY piggies are useful in the summer because they help mow the grass! :)) but in winter they just sit there looking fluffy and cute.

Anyone else out there have anyone who just can't really see the point of a guinea pig or why we own them?

I have then cos I love them :) They have such lovely natures and such individual personalities. I suppose a technical answer to your Dad's question would be that guineas were originally from South America and their primary purpose was to provide a food source to the local carnivores :( I understand that they were brought back to Europe as exotic pets as they were so different from other pets of the time I suppose that's how they become the norm elsewhere in the world.

One could argue that point for a lot of the worlds animals and insects...I mean, what is the point of a wasp? a bee yes definately, but a wasp? hateful things but it is all to do with the worlds eco system.... yaddy you... I suppose!

They are very useful for eating up spare veggie peelings and leftovers - what else would you do with cauliflower leaves? :))

And they act as hand and lap warmers on the cold winter evenings when you're watching telly. :)

And they act as an alarm clock in the morning when they decide it's breakfast time and I'm still asleep :{

And in my case - I've met lots of lovely people as a result of having them and rescuing / rehoming!

So THERE!

And they are good for helping lower your stress levels, something to do with when you stroke an animal it does something in your brain which releases a chemical which makes you feel good...something like that anyway :))

Just looking at piggies makes me feel good:)

Sophie has it right they are vegetable disposals, they eat it all. Plus they are soft and cuddly but last they make nice soothing noises when happy. Similar to Tribbles on Startrack just dont feed them in mixed groups or you will be up to your elbows in them.

Lol ok stuff that I can say to my dad when he next says "What is the purchase of you." :p

Mine cheer me up. I know I wouldn't have gotten through last year if it hadn't been for my piggies. I love that I get greeted by them all whenever they see me :)

According to my parents now that I have changed career & become a childminder I should 'get rid of them all'. You can imagine how happy there were to hear that I am getting 2 news boys in a month or so! Like I am bothered what they say! -c

They serve so many purposes - cut the grass, eat your scraps, make you laugh, talk to you when no one else will (or when you're on your own!), provide an evening's entertainment, make you worry endlessly when they become sick, but I think the most important thing is they love you for no other reason than they can! x) A small bundle of furry love, complete with a squeak & growl designed to make you laugh even when you have just lost one of piggies. That reminds me why i have them & why I wouldn't not ever have them! And, of course, they are all different personaities & behaviours! xx>>>

Plus, when it comes to children they are a great way of learning about life & caring for something/one other than yourself. I have a 15 month old little boy I care for who is fascinated by my boys at breakfast time, munching & chatting away! His smile says it all! :))

Thank goodness piggies made it to our shores - and that God made them for us all to love! x)x)x)

I suppose its different for all. If i didnt have tallulah then i would live on my own and id have no one to talk to when i get home. x)

Just like most animals, horses, dogs, cats.. They bring joy into your life. You get to take care of them and the privelidge of keeping them healthy and happy.
I remember hearing years ago that people who had a dog lived a little bit longer. I think it's true.
Although, I have to admit my cats can drive me nuts. Only because I have a toddler who wakes up if you drop a pin. My kitties like to meow really loud at 2am and wake her up. Then mommy (me) gets not sleep.
Anyway, that was off topic.. LOL
But yes, Guinea pigs make you happy! Isn't that the point of life? To find happiness? I think so, anyway x)

My pigs actually really helped when I moved out of my parent's house and in with my boyfriend!

Since he's in full time work and I'm a lazy student, I'm in the house by myself an awful lot, and having them running about the floor or talking to me (or even just having them to talk to) makes it a whole lot easier =]

They are also better to watch than TV, they're a comedy, a drama and occasoinally a thiller all at once!

=]

You could turn it around and say what is the point of humans! All we have really done is try and destroy the planet we live on! :))

Animals are here because they were here first and dont have to have a purpose so :p to people who say otherwise :))...

(ANd piggies are verrrry cute and their purpose is to make us go AWWWW...) :)):)):))

they are tiny geniuses.much smarter than i am! they may know the answers to the worlds problems? who knows

I like the idea of guineas being tiny geniuses! As much as I find them entertaining & loving, they probably know me better than i know myself. And they have me wrapped round their little fingers. It would explain how I keep buying them cucumber even when it is very expensive .... @)@)@)

yup, agree. They make you get out of bed in the morning even if there's no other reason and you'e rather be in bed... They make you sit up at night next to them to make sure they're OK. And their little head always puts a smile back on your face when things are tough.

I get this all the time off people i know and i hate it when they say it, as my guinea pigs bring me so much joy and most people dont see the point in them until they have one as most people think they are thick and just eat all day long (which granted they do) which is what i thought before i got my girls!

But each one has a diffent personality and they are soo funny! and they get bad press because i find mine are actually very smart they know when they are being naughty they understand things like "come here" or "no"!

A recent thing that annoyed me was when my guinea pig was ill and i was worrying all the time, i found alot of people saying
"i dont get why you are worrying all the time, its just a guinea pig!" and yet they understood worrying about a dog or cat!

I had a family come to view some piggies and the "dad's" only comment to me during their half hour visit was " I don't really see the point of pets". mallethead

It was obvious from his complete lack of interest that he would never be converted either. I did answer "does there have to be a point to them? If a person enjoys meeting their individual needs and sharing their life with them, why does there have to be a point to them?" rolleyes

Needless to say they didn't adopt any pigs from me!

If they do have to have a purpose I think it is to teach us to be good slaves :(|) I'm still in training :(|)

I agree with Madmush - piggies are such brilliant company, I talk to them all the time and they make me laugh so much. And they are great to cuddle after a bad day at work. I wouldn't be without them, they are gorgeous little furballs! Anyway you could ask whats the point of anything!

I think that guinea pigs are good for the soul. They make me laugh when I am sad. They are always around when I am lonely. Cuddling them is just sooo goooood. Their dirt make you more hoovering xx>>>

Not all things can be used for anything.

What about men ? They are useless unless they do have plenty of money mallethead

Indeed, Sue, and most humans only destroy the earth and bring discomfort to other humans (don't even get me started on wars!), so what is the point in THAT? :))

Well said Sophie!

Who else gets dead excited when you open the fridge when you get home from an awful day and work & squeek excitely to see you come in the door.

Who else gives in and lets you have a cuddle when they're not really in the mood & then acts really greatful for it (squeek squeek)

Who else makes a complete mess by pouring a bowl of food over their heads and looks at you as if to say "how did that happen" without making you cross?(in fact it is very cute)

Who else says thank-you a thousand times & jumps for joy when you clean out their cage/bedroom.

Who else thinks that the gift of a kitchen roll middle is better than any toy money can buy.

Who else thinks it's christmas when you give them half a carrot that you can't even be bother to chop up.

Who else dances round the room each evening providing you with comedy for no reason other than it is fun!

Who else makes you want to visit every pet shop and buy every toy in there just so when you find one they actually like you can enjoy watching them play!

:))

I don't really know how I survived without my babies only been a piggie mum for 6 weeks and can't remember what it was like before! :)

thank you, Briony, I totally agree. My piggies just have to work on them being thankful for me cleaning out their cages! :))

Well, according to my son (who's ten), the point of a guinea pig is that they're cute, and loveable, and they're huggable, and it's adding more to the family. Words of wisdom...
