I have been syringe feeding Treacle now 2-4 times a day since the end of June, she has been to the vet 3 or 4 times, has tried 2 antibiotics, Metacam and a powder for drying up mucus. She has gone up and down repeatedly during this time, she lost a load of weight, put half of it back on, and lost it again. She just can't seem to throw off the illness, it keeps coming back at her no matter how hard she tries. I don't know how long we can keep up the syringe feeding, next week she is in piggy kennels for a week so she won't have anything special, it's such a persistent complaint I don't know what to make of it. The vet said it was nothing to worry about but I feel she can't seem to win. She is 3 and very happy with 2 young "nieces", she loves her life and we can't bear to give up.

:hug::hug:Lots of hugs as it sounds like you both are working very hard to keep on fighting :hug::hug:

I'm guessing her symptoms represent a URI, as you spoke about mucus?

You say you tried two antibiotics, which ones?

Zithromax is a very strong antibiotic and has a good success rate against URI's perhaps it's worth considering if indeed this is the issue.

Yes the vet said URTI, the first was baytril which she had a second course of, I don't know what the other antibiotic was called, I will ask about the one you recommend, thankyou.

Just another thought. Has the vet checked her heart? Recurrent or hard to shift respiratory infections can be one of the symptoms. Is her breathing laboured or is it mainly a snotty nose?

Her breathing is noisy, like a creaky sound, and she periodically does loud coughs / sneezes. Not really very much snot evident. I will ask about the heart, thankyou very much.

There is a vet locator on the forum for piggy savvy vets in the uk, will be worth having a look at it. I agree with @helen105281 that a heart issue should be considered, my sow was treated for a URI twice before i took her to a specialist who diagnosed her with heart failure. If they xray her chest they should be able to see if she has fluid rather than mucous, as well as any increased size of the heart.

All the best
