My lovely Caramel is limping at the mo, can't see anything worng but she is not putting her weight on her foot. Obviously if it continues I will get her to the vet but does anyone have any advice on how to make her comfortable and should I encourage or limit her moving around.

She's (as usual) got a good appetite and seems happy to use her foot to climb up me but is not actually walking on it.

Any ideas?

She may have sprained it, but as she is still putting weight on it, it shouldn't be broken.

Nerys has sprained her front leg and limping around. She's on metacam from the vet (which is an anti-inflammatory as well as a painkiller). But in a pinch you can give her 0.2 ml children's nurofen from the pharmacy to make her more comfy.

I would recommend having the leg seen by a vet, just in case.

Thanks I will make her an appointment in the morning

I agree with Wiebke's advice, children's Nurofen is something I turn to if I have a limping piggie.

Will she let you touch her leg/foot without much bother? It's often a simple sprain/strain that clears up without any particular intervention, I find if it continues for more than a couple of days then I prefer to restrict movement (e.g. no floor time, smaller cage (usually a 2x2)) and contact the vet. If it gets worse then obviously vet sooner etc. :)

Thank you for your replies

how often should I give her the neurofen?

She is putting it on the floor with no problems but she is not putting weight on it. she was quite happy for me to have a look at her leg without so much as a whimper.

Nurofen can be given up to twice daily.

It *sounds* like a simple strain, one of my own was doing just as you describe not too long ago. Foot on the floor fine, no tenderness when the foot is touched, but still not putting weight on it. My girl was walking normally within two days. :)

I gave her some nurofen last night and greedy little thing that she is, gobbled it up. After I spent ages getting a syringe just in case i could have put it in a bowl and she would have lapped it up! drool
bless her, she snuggled down in her cosy and went out like a light, she is a bit brighter this morning so thanks to all for the advice
