Of all the lovely things to eat in his cage, my guinea pig has started eating the newspaper and any cardboard things I put in there for him to play with.

I have had guinea pigs before that have nibbled at the edges of paper but he ate what looks like nearly half a sheet last night and half a cardboard loo roll tube!

He has access to a bowl of food, a full to the brim hayrack and gets fresh veggies everyday so why is he doing this?!

Will this amount cause him harm and is there anything I can do to stop him?

Any help would be very much appreciated! Thank you!

don't worry ours are the same! they have all the food they need dry, hay and veg and will still eat the loo roll! They all do it, I think they just fancy something different sometimes. don't worry, just lucky its free!

i have put a loo roll filled with hay in their cage for the first time today so will see when i get home if they have destroyed it!

Hope it doesnt cause any problems or chocco and marvin are in serious trouble! hehe. They have been eating their shoe boxes and toilet rolls as well as the occasioal newspaper...no issues so far :P

my old piggie peanut used to do this all the time! ripping paper and card.

my current piggie tooie seems to prefer plastic which i can tell you soooooooo annoying! especially as she is in my bedroom.:))

I have had many piggies over the years & at least 1 or other at a time has eaten or torn paper & card, as well as wallpaper, wires (especially phone cables for some reason), dog biscuits, boxes, toys etc etc! :o

I had one boy, Fudge (now in guinea heaven with my other boys up there!) who would strip the paper in his cage none stop. As soon as he was in a clean cage, the interior designing started! I actually miss the shredded paper now! The cage seems too tidy... :))

Aragon, who sadly departed 6 days ago, had a thing for blankets. I actually bought him 2 cheap throws & he woprked his way through them! I sent one with him to the crematorium & I have the other, although it is a stretch calling it a blanket anymore! Rather a collection of holes joined together by bits of fabric! ;)

the point is, no matter what they have eaten they seem to have been OK (so far) & it newer stops me panicking or worrying when someone decides to chomp something different! Still, it is what makes up my boys & I wouldn't want them any other way!
