Manny has had a big bladder stone removed today. The operation went fine and I will pick him up later.

Is it possible for bedding to get stuck in the wound? They are normally on Fitch but I have switched back to fleece and towels temporarily. Is this necessary? I have also put in a hay cookie instead of hay for the same reason. Also, is it OK for Manny to go back in with his cage mate to recover or do I need to put him in a separate cage?

Thanks

I am glad that all has gone well for Manny!

Please enquire how soon you can give him painkiller after the operation of that becomes necessary.

it would be good if you kept him on a light fleece and towels for the first few days. You may see some blood in his pee at first. Keep a good eye on him and check on him during the first night. Weigh him daily for the first two weeks and see the vet asap if he stops eating. If he is not eating, top him up with hand feed.

The operation will knit within 10-14 days. Depending on the relationship with Manny you can put them together once he's got the post op all clear after about 2 days or rather wait until the scar has knitted. You'd best re-introduce them on neutral ground.

Generally, bladder operations heal pretty well and without complications. There is a chance that stones can come back within weeks of an op, though.

Thank you :)

I kept him in the carrier overnight. He didn't poo all evening but he started again in the middle of the night. They are small but better formed and a better colour than before his operation. Weeing seems fine, hardly any blood. He hasn't been drinking from the bottle but he eats wet veg and accepts water from a syringe.

I put him back in with Bernard this morning (vet said this would be fine) and we have a post-op appointment on Friday.

Here are the stones she removed, with a 5p for scale. Before the operation he was squealing loudly almost constantly even with painkillers, but now he only does a few occasional quiet squeaks. He's still on Metacam for a few more days.

Poor boy! That is a sizeable stone! He will feel a lot better in himself as soon as the wounds are healing. :(

You could discuss giving cystease (glucosamine based) or vegetarian glucosamine to help coating the bladder walls from now on with your vet.

Wow! I bet he's feeling much better without that in his bladder!

That's very large, hopefully he will start to feel better now.
