Hi. I have always had short haired sows but fell in love with 2 longer haired sows. Poppy and Primrose are now 7 months old. They are both developing a bustle bottom.
Is the more wirey fur by the bottom part of the breed or is it grease that I need to be washing and bathing?
They are kept indoors on twice weekly changed fleece. Hay box cleaned 2-3 times daily. Cage has regularly sweeps as I work from home. 20mins outside in nice weather.
Nice clean environment.
I don’t want to do the wrong thing so any guidance much appreciated. I will try to attach photos.

It definitely could be part of their breed @Fishybat. Just keep an eye on it getting greasy. They may also need a bit of a trim if the hair starts getting in the way and they wee on it.

I've had pigs for about 20 years and I recently adopted my first long haired boy. I've given him a quick trim once but he's going to have a horrendous hairdo when I have to cut it properly.

Hi, I’m actually in a simalar situation. Always had short haired and recently rescued two females and it turns it they have a long hair in them. They have little skirts growing. :))
I just gave a little bum bath and am keeping an eye on them and may cut it back if they get too long. Be interesting to know what any of our seasoned long haired piggie owners do?

Betsy gets a very fashionable wedge cut every 4-6 weeks where I cut her beautiful skirt off as it starts to get matted and then taper it slightly to about half an inch or so up her back. The night before she visits The Ironing Board Salon she gets a bum bath. Once or twice in the summer she gets a radical grade 4 hairdo to keep her cool. She's due her first summer haircut somewhen this week in fact. She gets bribed with grass or veg and is a very good girl cos she just stays still stuffing her face while I get to work.

That is very helpful advice. Thank you. Just bought piggie shampoo. Do you use clippers grade 4 or scissors?
So much to learn with this long hair. Hope I don’t need to learn piggie hairstyles 🙈.

I used a mix of both clippers and scissors depending on the piggy and how much I need to cut off.

I have 4 long haired guinea pigs and they all get regular cuts esp around their bottoms as they get damp skirts. I use scissors as I found the clippers to be slow and not very efficient.

Yours are all so pretty.

Thank you everyone for your replies. I have just given both of them a bottom bath and a little scissor trim. Will wait until they dry and give further trim tomorrow.
It is so hot they both rather enjoyed it. Being a little damp will cool them as they are indoors so not cold.
