I was wondering if my care routine was good. Every morning I feed 1/4 cup of pellets for my two guinea pigs. At around 9:30-10:00pm I feed 1 1/2 cups of leafy vegetables and occasionally fruit. After that I will spot clean their cage, clean their water dish, and refill their hay. Once every three days I clean out their litter area and once a week I take out all of the fleece liners and wash them. Once a month I will weigh them. What are your care routines?

I would use a tablespoon to measure pellets. I think a 1/4 cup is still a bit too much. Then 1 cup of veg each (scatter feeding). Weighing should be weekly as that’s the best way to spot any issues - slowed eating leading to weight loss. Feeding schedule depends on what works for you and your piggies. Mine now get a lettuce leaf in the morning and water change. Then later on (5pm onwards) they’ll get their veg and pellets. I change the water again if necessary (the boys drink quite a bit) and top up their hay before closing them in for the night.

You do it the way it works best for you!

They should be weighed once a week as routine and then switching to weighing every day if you spot any issues . Once a month isn’t enough for you to spot any sudden weight drops issues and be able to act fast enough.

I go out to mine about 7am, top up hay and give a part of their veg portion. If it’s summer, they get put out in their run for the day.
Mid morning i go back out to them and poop pick and remove wet hay every day. Top up hay as necessary
Mid afternoon hay is checked and topped up if necessary
Then in the evening, as mine live in my shed, timing depends on the season but in winter about 4pm they are given the other half of their veg, hay and if it is a pellet day (mine only have pellets a few times a week) then they get their pellets. I go back out at 9pm to give them their heatpads.
If it’s summer, they stay out in their run until 9pm, then get out back in their shed with their hay, other half of veg Portion and pellets (if its a pellet day.)
Full cage clean once a week which is also weigh day and nail clipping/hair cutting when necessary

Hello. You have to fit in your care schedule around your daily routines. My two boys live in the garage. At 8am I give them their pellets for the day and a big handful of hay and their veggies. At noon they get a top up of hay. At 5.30 they get “play time”. This is either in their run on the grass or if it’s not nice weather then they go into my bathroom for a run about. They get veggies at this time too. At bed time they get a few pea flakes and more hay. I poop pick up at bedtime as well. Please weigh them every week as it’s the easiest way to make sure they are fit and healthy.

How much pellets should I be feeding? I feed the oxbow adult food and I feed 1/4 cup once a day. Is this a good amount?
I will start weighing weekly thank you for all of the replies!

One tablespoon per pig per day. It’s difficult as we don’t use cup measures in the UK!

When converted it seems that 1/4 of a cup is 3 tablespoons (so that will mean they are having one and a half tablespoons each)

1/8 of a cup seems to convert to 2 tablespoons so if you give 1/8 of a cup of pellets per day, then that is plenty for them both

Mine get breakfast veg, 4 tablespoons of pellets (I have 4 pigs so they get a tablespoon each), fresh hay and water at round 6.30am - 7am. I then top up their hay as needed throughout the day and then teatime veg at around 4pm and another hay top up. I then top their hay up again around 9.30pm - 10pm and tuck them in for the night. You have to do your routine around your daily life and what works for you

Our routine is morning pellets, fresh hay and water and a lettuce leaf.
Midday - a handful of herbs
Late afternoon- assorted veggies
Before human bedtime, top up hay if needed plus occasional treat of a pea flakes or two.
This is for 3 piggies.
The exact times depend on working time and the midday snack sometimes get missed if no-one is at home.

This works for us.
