I had quite a shock today when I took Cariad to Northampton to have her investigated further after two full courses of antibiotics for her apparent UTI had failed. She was suffering from a constantly smelly belly and bum; no blood spots, no bloody urine, no bum lifting or screaming when peeing and pooing - so it has come as a major shock to find that she has a huge bladder stone!

The shock is even greater since Cariad had a clean bladder x-ray earlier this summer as well as a bladder flush in conjunction with an untypical UTI; the stone must have grown very quickly in a matter of weeks!

Cariad has been tucking into some grass and a small bit of lettuce shortly after her return home, so I am keeping my fingers crossed that she will make a good recovery despite being quite low in body weight.

Her stone was truly massive - it is over a centimeter in length!

Let's hope that she continues to perk up tomorrow!

Oh my goodness that stone is huge! Poor Cariad. Get well soon little lady.

Sending lots of healing vibes from me and my boys x

Hi Wiebke

I had a similar experience with my girl Fleure - no symptoms, no bloody urine or wheeks but she started to get a bit stroppy with her husboar's attentions and didn;t like being picked up.... and then she started losing a bit of weight.

Took her to the vets and they were really on the ball - an X ray showed she had a similar size stone in her urethra - which was removed and she was back to normal!

Hope Cariad is soon back to her normal self soon.

x

PS - please save the stone if you can - might be useful for a research project into guinea pig stones/urinary issues that I am planning/trying to organise atm.

x

Super duper mega healing vibes and loves from us for dear sweet Cariad xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Huge hugs for you Weibke xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Poor Cariad :( That stone really is huge. It must have grown so fast in such a short space of time.

I am sending lots of gentle (((hugs))) and healing vibes and the four E's are sending piggy xoxo

Get well soon Cariad x

Poor Girl :( So glad you have got her sorted out. Lots of healing vibes to her and hope she is back to her old self soon x x

I am keeping the stone anyway, in case I need it analysed. ;)

What threw both Simon and me was that she had tested clear not long before...
I am glad that I'd booked her in with him - she'd ended up as an emergency with my local vets latest by tomorrow; and I trust Simon so much more when it comes to operations!
Fingers firmly crossed that what is causing that stone to grow so fast and so much has stopped, too! :{

Cariad has woken up again and is munching on some hay; I am very chuffed at how well she is doing!

One day i bet all piggy owners will have their own supply of stones! Mine is in the cutlery drawer in the kitchen...as you do! lol

Aw poor Cariad xoxo Sending lots of healing vibes to her! Thank goodness you had Simon do the op, you couldn't have been in a better place rolleyes You can barely see my Ziggy's scar under her neck, Simon did such a neat job! hope she continues to improve daily.

I think I have one of our previous piggy's stones somewhere, I think as a Forum we could probably make a few necklaces out of them all!

Bladder stones #1 and #2 lived on the windowsill behind the living room curtains before they were sent off to lab for analysis!
Cariad's is on my desk. With so many piggies, bladder stones are sadly bound to crop up sooner or later. :(

Good! My vet was admant it was calcium oxalate (because that's what the "outdated" reference book says) so I paid to have it analysed and yep - it came back as mainly calcium carbonate but with a touch of struvite which equals bacterial involvement somewhere down the line

Have the kidneys been checked and cleared for "seeds" on Xray?

Yay!

Simon didn't mention the kidneys. I'll ask him at Cariad's post op check!

Cariad has already started making normal looking poos. Great! She's had a tiny bit of Critical Care, but is tucking into a small portion of fresh grass now...

I would really like to know the results of these last two - are you willing to PM please as it would assist in formulating the research focus?

Poor little girl, that's a whopper - far better out than in. I'm sending her masses of healing thoughts, although it does sound as if she's doing pretty well at this stage.

I do hope she is ok and recovering well, what a shock, the poor girl must have been so uncomfortable!

xx

What a poor little piggie having to deal with that! That's a nasty looking stone, it's huge!
Healing wheeks for Cariad x

That must have been a shock but in some ways you didn't have a lot of time to stew about it which can be good. Glad that stone is out of her and hope she is continuing to eat well today - come on Cariad.

How is she doing this morning, Wiebke?

Cariad was not interested in her veg breakfast, but has been nibbling on hay off an on and is moving around the cage on her own. She's taken a bit more Critical Care with her morning meds and has polished off yet another small portion of fresh grass. She has been producing normal sized poos since late yesterday evening, which is very encouraging!

That is very promising. She is certainly in very capable hands :) Come on Cariad, keep at it!

Wow that's a big stone, hope Cariad continues to do well, she's in the best hands.
