hi my Guinea pig is 7 month old and usually very energetic only this morning I went to his cage he didn't seem that bothered and didn't eat much he has a lot of floor time he usually loves this he's out and all he's done is lay down he's even sat on my knee for longer that 10 minuets he never does this usually he's been out his cage an hour and I haven't seen any wees or poos just asking for some advice before I contact the vet please

If you haven't seen any wees or poos in his cage today then it is urgent you see a vet ASAP as his system may be shutting down. please try and see one today as tomorrow could be too late. He certainly sounds like he isn't well and as guinea pigs hide signs of illness well he must be feeling poorly to be so quiet and listless.

There is a vet locator at the top of the page so feel free to use it to find the closest good, guinea pig vet close to you. Most vets will see guinea pigs but many do not have good experience with small animals like them and may not be able to give you best advice. Unfortunately although common pets, guinea pigs are classed as exotics from a veterinary point of view.

If you can add your location to your profile we can give you more targeted advice to your locality as we have members all over the world!

Good luck and let us know how he gets on. x

Please switch to weighing him daily at the same time of the feeding cycle (either before or after his dinner, for instance) instead weighing weekly; that way you can keep an eye on his food intake. If he is not eating and drinking much, please step in with syringe feeding and watering asap to keep the guts going, even if it is just topping up. here is our step-by-step guide: Complete Syringe Feeding Guide

See a vet promptly; loss of appetite and apathy are always very worrying.
We have got a recommend UK vets locator on the top bar, but may be able to provide a link to recommended piggy savvy vets in other countries.

As we have got members from all over the world, could you please add your country, state/province or UK county to your details, so we can tailor any advice as much as possible to what is available and doable where you are. Click on your username on the top bar, then go to personal details and scroll down to location. Thank you!

All the best! I am glad that he is a bit perkier. I hope that your vet can find out what is the matter with him.

Hi just to let you know he's been to the vets they couldn't see anything seriously wrong but are treating him for infection just incase and hopefully he picks up by tomorrow or back to the vets

Fingers firmly crossed! Keep weighing him daily for the time being, so you can step in with supportive care as quickly as necessary.

He's picked up loads and starting to eat little bits so hopefully he'll be fine
