Hi, I've recently started work in a place where being off sick is almost treated as a disciplinary matter and holidays have to be booked at least three weeks in advance. Although not in that situation at the moment I cant help but worry about what I would do should I ever have a sick piggy, especially if I needed to syringe feed. I dont have anyone else who could do it for me. Its really worrying me. What do others do? I know I'm probably silly to worry about something that may not even happen but having read of the huge amount of cases on here where syringe feeding or meds have to be given I feel I need to have a plan in place should it occur.

I know exactly how you feel - I work in the public sector - you aren't allowed to be sick in the public sector! I haven't had the experience myself but I have heard that you can pay to leave piggles with vets and they will do the syringe feeding. I could be wrong but it is maybe something to investigate.

Thanks, that is maybe something I would have to look into if need be. Hate the thought of not being with them if they were ill or them transferring their affections from me to the vet nurses though.

I've been in situation before and the vets were more than willing to take Midge in for the day. I made up a goody bag as well as taking in her own critical care or other syringe feed with her as well as any medication (kept the cost down). I dropped her off at 8 o'clock and picked her up when I finished work about 4.30. If I remember it cost between 8-10 pounds. Obviously costs will be different depending on the area you live.

I've worried about this and I only work part time, If I live close by any piggy slaves on here and they needed that kind of help I would be happy to help them during the day :)

I have been in this situation and it's not nice. I never thought to ask the vet if they could help.

It is a really worrying thought, especially when you'd be paying for treatments already.

I think you're very wise to think about this now . I have looked after a guinea pig who has been on twice daily medication and this is just about manageable when holding down a full time job. Anything more than this , I would need to either pay for my guinea pig to stay at the vets or go to the boarding service I use when I go on holiday.

I'm afraid my OH isn't guinea pig savvy - I once went away for a conference which involved an overnight stay - He managed to chuck some veggies into their cage but forgot to fill up their water bottles.

I am fortunate that I have found a boarding service that I am very happy with .

If I go away - they go in - even if it is just for one night .
